There has always been a lot of debate on the subject of breastfeeding and people have often argued about the length of time for which a child should be breastfed for. The topic has been backed by a full-blown public campaign and though, most women would stop breastfeeding their child after one year, however the Channel 4 documentary film titled Extraordinary Breastfeeding provides the detail of cases that would boggle us all. To this day breastfeeding remains a controversial topic and there are many people who maintain their stance and equate breastfeeding of a child past the age of 18 months with pedophilia and even child abuse.
Therefore, it is understandable why Extraordinary Breastfeeding earned such a dramatic response, as the Channel 4 documentary film juxtaposes the lives of three women at different stages of Breastfeeding. It features women on both sides of the spectrum and also those who prefer to stay in the middle. It is quite intriguing to shift from a woman, who stopped breastfeeding her child after 6 months to another woman who continues to breastfeed her 7-year old daughter and her 5-month old baby. The practice has been frowned upon by many in the society, but the woman remains resolute and intends to continue breastfeeding both her children for as long as she can.
Extraordinary Breastfeeding - The Channel 4 documentary film aims to deconstruct the stigma associated with breastfeeding and expose a different perspective on the subject. The Channel 4 documentary film features full-length interviews that provide subjective insight on the matter, the documentary film itself has maintained an objective stance. Breastfeeding fully-grown children may not be a justified step, but halting breastfeeding before the child turns 1 may also not be the answer. Indeed, breastfeeding is a natural process and the arguments against it are somewhat baseless. People need to open up their minds and this Channel 4 documentary film helps them do exactly that. The Channel 4 documentary film is very interesting and will definitely be an uplifting and an educational experience for young, lactating mothers; however, the content of the documentary film may not be suitable for young viewers, as it contains numerous bare-breasted sequences. Therefore, viewer's discretion is advised.
