Septic tanks are facts of life for anyone not hooked into a municipal sewage system, and can cause difficulties and confusion for anyone who is unaccustomed to that way of life. One of a septic tank's main resources is the bacteria that gets rid of the waste. Phosphates are naturally occurring compounds that are commonly found in all kinds of cleaners. Though they help regulate the pH balance of wash water and are all-purpose cleaners, too much can cause an explosion in growth. Phosphate based cleaners can damage the good bacteria found in a septic tank, and should not be used. Instead, search the label for 'phosphate free' or a phosphate alternative.
Plastic or clay based cleansers are one of the other alternatives. These are a little healthier for the environment than phosphates in larger doses, but the fillers that are often found in these cleaners can clog the septic lines. A clogged line may not be as big a deal as a ruptured or overflowing tank, but they still require time and money to repair. Since these things are commonly found in everything from gel to powder, it is important to check the labels on household cleansers.
Natural cleansers, however, do not cause build-up, have no fillers, and will not adversely affect the delicate eco-system of a septic tank. People have been using naturally acidic things to clean with for years and years, and they are still wildly popular among eco-friendly people. Vinegar is one of the most popular. It cleans, disinfects, and even deodorizes once the smell of the vinegar itself fades. It is commonly used in coffee makers to dissolve any build-up without harming the internal workings, and can also be used on clogged showerheads. Lemon juice works on a similar principal, being highly acidic, not to mention it smells better.
It has often been asserted that liquid gels and powdered cleaners can clog a septic system. It is most likely not, however, the liquid or powder itself that is clogging the system (unless, of course, they are not dissolving properly in the water), but the additives above. In order to ensure the septic system runs smoothly, it is best to make sure your detergent, if you choose to use one, does not contain clay, phosphates or plastic, and that scheduled maintenance is performed properly and on time.
