Circular saws come in three kinds: worm drive and hypoid saws used mostly in construction projects, plunge saws with guide rails and standard-drive circular saws commonly found in both home workshops and construction jobs. The circular saw is extremely popular among carpenters and home woodworkers because of its power and the ability to cut large pieces of material without a lot of physical fatigue and getting tired arms. The disadvantage of a circular saw is that it's not extremely accurate because of the difficulty of being to follow a cut line. When you're working on decks or roofs, this level of inaccuracy is acceptable. But, if you're a more demanding woodworker and have a cabinet project, you would probably depend more on a sturdier table saw. This is because table saws have strong fences that give a consistent reference point and produce straighter cuts.
A circular saw with a worm drive is popular with professional carpenters who need power and durability in their tools. A worm-drive saw runs at lower RPMs than sidewinder circular saws. This produces more torque at the cutting surface and reduces the likelihood of the saw bogging down. A worm-drive is the choice when cutting thick pieces of lumber, 2x4s and 2x6s, or wet material. Worm-drive saws are slightly heavier than sidewinder saws, 12 to 15 pounds, but after a little use, you get used to the weight and learn to appreciate the more solid feel of a worm-drive saw.
Plunge type saws have metal guide rails that make them useful for trimming. The saw makes its cut very close to the rail without actually touching it. A lot of plunge saws are constructed to hold the material being cut, eliminating the need for clamps. However, if you're like me, I still prefer to use clamps; it just gives me a more firm and solid feeling when making the cut, especially when I need at least a reasonable level of accuracy. Plunge-type circular saws are specially designed to make a cut in the middle of large sheets of wood.
The most popular circular saw for general use is the 7 inch saw. It doesn't cost much: ranging from $80 up to around $200. It's also relatively light, usually 10 to 12 pounds. Some models are just basic with few features, while others can have dual-beam laser guide lines. These saws typically come with sidewinder type motors. They operate at higher RPMs compared to worm-drive saws and produce less torque.
