บทที่ 7 ขอให้ถือสายคอย
(Asking the caller to wait)
ในสถานการณ์ที่บุคคลที่ผู้เรียกสายต้องการจะพูดด้วยติดธุระไม่ว่างที่จะมารับสายในทันทีทันใด แต่ธุระที่กำลังทำอยู่นั้นใช้เวลาไม่นานนัก หรือทำจนเกือบจะเสร็จแล้ว ซึ่งหากผู้เรียกสายจะถือสายคอยสักครู่บุคคลดังกล่าวก็จะมารับสายได้ คำพูดที่ผู้รับสายจะใช้ชี้แจงกับผู้เรียกสายโดยใช้ตามหลังบางคำพูดที่มีอยู่ในบทที่ 6 ได้ คือ

But if you would like to hold on for a minute/moment, he/she will be able to talk to you.
But if you could hold on for a minute/moment, he/she will be able to talk to you.
But if you could wait for a few minutes, you can talk to him/her.
Will you hold for a few minutes? He’ll finish/be out shortly.
You can talk to him in a minute if you’d like to hold on.
But he/she’ll be back shortly. Would you please hold the line for a moment?
สถานการณ์ตัวอย่าง

ผู้เรียก : Could you put me through to Mrs. Joyce Peterson, please?
ผู้รับ : I’m afraid she is on the other line at the moment. But if you would like to hold on for a few minutes, I think she will be able to talk to you.
ผู้เรียก : Paul Burke, please.
ผู้รับ : I’m afraid Mr. Burke has just stepped out. But he’ll be back shortly. Would you please hold the line for a moment?
ผู้เรียก : May I speak to sale manager, please?
ผู้รับ : I’m sorry, but she is meeting with a customer right now. But I think she’ll be free in a minute or two. Would you like to hold on?
