PWFL at World Water Week 2012 @Stockholm Sweden ![]() Event Description: The world's water resourcessituation is characterized by a very uneven distribution in relation to theneed and demand for food. These circumstances make it necessary and rational totrade agricultural products between areas and groups of people where theresource endowment makes it possible to produce a surplus and areas andsocieties where import is the only, or the best, option for food security.Variation in terms of technological and governance capacity to produce, processand market agricultural commodities also contribute to trade. The scope andscale of the evolving trade is unlike anything seen before. Farmers, communities and a number of intermediaries between producers and consumers inthe food supply chain are now increasingly involved in trading activities.Added to the open trade is the 'silent trade' where land - and water - isacquired by foreign governments and companies, in countries with a relativeabundance of resources. This workshop willinvestigate the flows of food products and the opportunities and threatspresented through trade. The need and rational for an expansion of trade willbe scrutinized with reference to differences in water resources, but also thevariation between countries in terms of technologies, and governance capacityto produce, process and market agricultural commodities. The roles of nationaland local governments, private companies and civil society and the localimplications from this trade, including the acquisition of land and water inother countries, will be addressed.
