ATP - US OPEN DRAW
Roger will play his first match at the US Open 2009 against Devin Britton. The 18 year-old American is 1m93 tall and currently holds position 1364 in the world ranking. After that Roger could meet Germany's Simon Greul (ATP 64) or a qualifier. Later on, assuming that the seeded players proceed, he would play Lleyton Hewitt (31), Tommy Robredo (14) or James Blake (21), then Robin Söderling (12) or Nikolay Davydenko (8). Novak Djokovic (4) or Andy Roddick (5) would follow on the path to the semi-finals.
A sixth consecutive title would make Roger the first player, after Bill Tilden in the 1920s, to have achieved such a record!
It's No Joke! American Rookie To Face Federer At US Open
American rookie Devin Britton thought his Octagon agent Kelly Wolf was kidding him when she said his first-round opponent in his debut US Open was Roger Federer. But, in a sign of the times, it took the teenagers mobile phone to convince him.
I was pretty shocked. When Kelly told me I didnt believe her at first, but then I got 15 text messages in the space of 10 minutes and I knew it was true," he says. "I thought, This is crazy. Later, when I walked into the locker room, the American guys Brendan Evans, Jesse Levine and Robby Ginepri just started laughing at me. But everyone has been supportive.
I have a sort of love-hate relationship about it. Its once-in-a-lifetime experience to play Roger Federer at the US Open, but at the same time it doesnt make winning the first-round at a very important tournament very easy.
So, if he could choose, would he rather play Federer for the experience or have a better shot at reaching the second round - and collecting a $31,000 cheque - by playing an unknown qualifier? Ill take the unknown qualifier and then Federer in the second round, Britton jokes.
Britton, 18, reached the US Open junior final last year, falling to Grigor Dimitrov. He turned professional earlier this year after becoming just the third player in history to win the NCAA title in his freshman year, at the University of Mississippi. I want to be a tennis player and after winning the NCAA I felt like there was not much more I can accomplish. I want to go after my pro career. To this point, he has played just 10 Futures matches (2-8 record), two Challenger matches (0-2) and one ATP-level match (0-1) a 6-3, 7-5 loss to countryman Rajeev Ram in the first round of Indianapolis last month.
In the first six hours after the draw was made, Britton says that he received about 100 phone calls and text messages. And the number of his followers on Twitter (@DevinBritton) has jumped from 831 to more than 900. Ten minutes after the draw the phone started ringing off the hook. Ive heard from people I have spoken to in forever. Ive had a lot of requests for tickets, but unfortunately they are all being used.
Should he play on Arthur Ashe Stadium, Britton will receive 15 box seats. His parents, Scott and Cindy, sister Katie (22), coaches Mike Sell and Hugo Armando and a couple of USTA trainers will be in the box, along with some of his mothers friends. One person missing will be his eldest sister, Tara Chez (25), whose busy work schedule will keep her grounded back home in Mississippi.
Looking ahead to the biggest match of his career, Britton says: Im a little nervous about it. Its definitely not a match I have a lot of expectations in. Ill just play my hardest and hopefully give him some resistance. Id love to play a night match. If Im playing Roger at the Open I may as well get the full vibe and really soak it up.
Picking Federer always is in vogue By Martin Rogers
Roger Federer began his latest New York adventure with a spot on the cover of Men's Vogue magazine - expect him to end it hoisting aloft the U.S. Open trophy.
The Swiss world No. 1 has triumphed in the Big Apple the past five years, and there is little to suggest he will slip up this time around.
Federer comes into the U.S. Open having revitalized his career following a disappointing 2008 and is back to the awesome peak of his powers.
Victories in the French Open and at Wimbledon, combined with his wife Mirka giving birth to twin daughters, make this a spectacular year for Federer.
The 28-year-old's defense of his title should be assisted by a comfortable draw. He is scheduled to meet eighth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinal, but the Russian could be unseated by fast-improving and big-serving American Sam Querrey.
But the best home hope once again will be Andy Roddick, and the world No.5 looks good for a run to the last four. Roddick's giant serve, improved physical condition and enhanced consistency since linking up with new coach Larry Stefanki have him primed to go deep, but Federer likely will be too great an obstacle in the semis.
The bottom half promises a repeat of last year's semi between Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal, with Nadal's suspect fitness following his return from injury and Murray's hardcourt prowess leaning toward another win for the Scot.
In the end, though, it is impossible to look past Federer, who beat Murray in Cincinnati last week and rarely has looked hungrier.
Pete Sampras' Grand Slam record already has gone; now Federer is chasing his 16th Slam victory and beyond. On Sept. 13 he should add one more to the list.
PREDICTIONS
Quarterfinals: Federer beats Querrey; Roddick beats Djokovic; Nadal beats Berdych; Murray beats del Potro
Semifinals: Federer beats Roddick; Murray beats Nadal
It is starting to feel like 2002 in women's tennis, as Serena Williams grunts and swipes a blistering trail through the Grand Slam year.
Seven years ago Williams blasted her way to three Slam titles, before completing the "Serena Slam" at the following year's Australian Open.
That sense of inevitability is back, with Williams looking dominant in lifting the Aussie and Wimbledon titles in 2009.
Despite a series of dismal results in smaller events, there seems to be no stopping her when it really counts.
Williams is a red-hot favorite heading into the U.S. Open on Monday and it is hard to identify a player in the field who has a realistic chance of toppling her if she is in any kind of form.
A semifinal meeting between Serena and her big sister Venus is a possibility, although Venus could falter against rising star Victoria Azarenka in the quarters.
The most intriguing potential matchup in the early rounds is between Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova, who is seeded down at No. 29 as she hikes the comeback trail from injury.
Sharapova lost to Dementieva in the Toronto final but is quickly rediscovering form and is a player no high seed wants to run into.
World No. 1 Dinara Safina has a point to prove, with the sniping critics highlighting her failure to win a Slam despite three times reaching the final.
However, while Safina has the game and mentality to take her to the title game, it's going to be Serena-time, once again.
PREDICTIONS
Quarterfinals: Safina beats Lisicki; Sharapova beats Caroline Wozniacki; Azarenka beats V. Williams; S. Williams beats Pennetta
Semifinals: Safina beats Sharapova; S. Williams beats Azarenka
