There are a number of competing and overlapping ways to classify fallacies of argumentation. For example, they can be classified as either formal or informal. A formal fallacy can be detected by examining the logical form of the reasoning, whereas an informal fallacy depends upon the content of the reasoning and possibly the purpose of the reasoning. That is, informal fallacies are errors of reasoning that cannot easily be expressed in our system of formal logic (such as symbolic, deductive, predicate logic).

1.เหตุผลวิบัติทางรูปแบบ (Formal or Logical Fallacy) เป็นการอ้างเหตุผลบกพร่อง ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการอ้างเหตุผลแบบนิรนัยโดยเฉพาะ และมีลักษณะเป็นความผิดพลาดในทางรูปแบบซึ่งสามารถรู้ได้โดยการตรวจสอบรูปแบบหรือโครงสร้างของการอ้างเหตุผล
2.เหตุผลวิบัติทางเนื้อหา (Informal or Material Fallacy) เป็นการอ้างเหตุผลบกพร่อง ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการอ้างเหตุผลแบบอุปนัยโดยเฉพาะและสามารถรู้ได้โดยการวิเคราะห์เนื้อหา ของการอ้างเหตุผลนั้น
3.เหตุผลวิบัติทางจิตวิทยา (Psychological Fallacy) เป็นการอ้างเหตุผลบกพร่องอันเกิดจากองค์ประกอบทางจิตวิทยา
เท่าที่สืบค้น แบ่งสามกลุ่มนี้ไม่เป็นที่นิยม มักจะไปรวมเป็นกลุ่ม Informal Fallacy
