Bangkok, Thailand – September 28, 2023: Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), a leading port operator in Thailand, underscores the critical role of port reception facilities in creating a sustainable maritime transport industry. This commitment was highlighted during the 2023 World Maritime Day celebration at the Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus.
 

As part of the event, Mr Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Hutchison Ports Thailand and Southeast Asia, joined the annual uniform ceremony to mark the Class of 2023's graduation and presented the company's vision, reaffirming its dedication to promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable maritime transport. This vision focuses on creating reception facilities to manage waste from cargo vessels efficiently while reducing environmental impact.

During the event, Mr Ashworth had the privilege to present the sustainable topic of "Reception Facilities" to raise awareness about the pivotal role of port operators in managing waste from maritime cargo transport. This role aligns with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) efforts to reduce pollution resulting from shipping operations.

Mr Ashworth said, "We are honoured to have been invited by Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, to participate in the 2023 graduation ceremony and share our insights on the development of reception facilities. This event coincides with the World Maritime Day celebration, and this year, the IMO has called upon stakeholders in the industry to commit to ongoing efforts to prevent pollution from ships, as outlined in MARPOL."

The IMO has designated MARPOL as a cornerstone in preventing pollution and safeguarding the marine environment from the impact of vessel operations. One of MARPOL's key provisions stipulates that port reception facilities must be equipped to receive and manage waste and hazardous substances from ships to prevent the release of pollutants into the sea.

To fulfil this mission, Hutchison Ports Group invested 450 million THB to develop reception facilities at Westports, Port Klang, Malaysia, spanning 1.7 acres. The construction is expected to be completed within 12 months. Once finished, Westports will be able to handle and manage hazardous waste and hazardous liquids from cargo vessels according to IMO regulations, further facilitating recycling and waste disposal processes within the port.

"We hope that the Thai government will recognise the importance of developing reception facilities to elevate the service capabilities of Laem Chabang Port to meet the needs of global shipping lines. This will also complement the efforts to make Laem Chabang a green port and ensure sustainable business operations in the future," added Mr Stephen Ashworth.
 

In June, Hutchison Ports Thailand signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the International Maritime Studies, Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, to continue its cooperation in promoting academic and creative activities supporting sustainable maritime transport development. Under this partnership, HPT will support curriculum development, offer internship opportunities to students at the company, and contribute to research related to port operations. Furthermore, Mr Stephen Ashworth serves as a special guest lecturer, educating students on sustainable maritime transport practices.
