Highlights of Château d'Amboise:

• The castle originally belonged to the Amboise family before King Charles VII seized it and transformed it into a royal residence.

• Charles VIII, his successor, greatly expanded the castle in the Renaissance style after bringing in architects and artists from Italy. He died here in 1498 after striking his head on a stone door lintel inside the castle!

• Later, King Francis I reigned. He admired Leonardo da Vinci, the famed genius behind masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo lived nearby, and after his death in 1519, he was buried in the castle’s Chapelle Saint-Hubert.

• King Henry II frequently used the castle, often with his queen, Catherine de Medici, and their children.

• After Henry II’s death, his eldest son became King Francis II, who was married to Mary Stuart (Mary, Queen of Scots). Both had spent their childhood years here, since Mary was sent from Scotland to be raised and educated at the French royal court. After Francis II’s death, Mary returned to Scotland.
