Highlights of Ambras Castle:

• Originally a 10th-century fortress, Ambras Castle was purchased by Archduke Ferdinand II as a gift for his commoner wife, Philippine Welser. The Archduke had fallen in love with Philippine from the beginning, and the couple secretly married because his family did not approve. Despite this, their bond remained strong: they lived together, had four children, and shared 23 years of marriage until Philippine’s death.
• Two years later, Ferdinand remarried—this time to his much younger niece (his sister’s daughter), who was 37 years his junior. He lived another 13 years after this second marriage before passing away.
• After Ferdinand’s time, the castle changed ownership multiple times and was eventually taken over by the Austrian state. It was opened as a museum, showcasing Ferdinand’s extensive collections, including artworks, arms and armor, portraits, sculptures, and much more.
• Thanks to these collections, Ambras Castle is often described as one of the very first museums in the world.
