According to local legend, the name Egeskov (“oak forest”) comes from the massive oak piles used to support the castle’s foundation (Ege = oak, skov = forest). The castle was built on oak pilings sunk into the mud and lakebed.
Built during a time when Danish nobles fortified their residences due to political unrest (such as the aftermath of the Count’s Feud), giving it a unique blend of manor house and fortress.
The estate dates back to the 15th century, but the present castle was built by Frands Brockenhuus. It later passed through several noble families, including the Bille-Brahe family, who owned it until the late 18th century.
One of the oldest and best-preserved Renaissance water castles in Europe.
The grounds include museums and exhibitions, such as a classic car and motorcycle museum, a firefighting and emergency vehicle museum, and Titania’s Palace — a famous dollhouse.
Today, the castle is still a residence of the Ahlefeldt-Laurvig-Bille family, while also functioning as a museum open to the public.
