Why don't you do it? áÅéÇ·ÓäÁäÁè·Ó If you are foreigners who know some Thai, you might wonder if they are different. If Thais say “·Ó·ÓäÁ/tham-tham-mai/why do you do it?”, or “áÅéÇ·Ó·ÓäÁ/láew-tham-tham-mai/why did you do it?”, or “·ÓäÁäÁè·Ó/tham-mai-mâi-tham/why don’t you do it?” Yeah, they sound funny. I guess you might notice that there are present simple and past simple. The one with “áÅéÇ/láew” is in the past. Others are present. And “äÁè/mâi” is for negative statements or negative questions. When we ask “ä»ÁÑêÂ/bpai-mái/wanna go?“, the answer might be “ä»ÊÔ/bpai-sì/of course“, or “äÁèä»/ mâi-bpai/no”, or “äÁèä»áÅéÇ/ mâi-bpai-láew /no (means I wanted to go but I changed my mind)”. If you hear “·ÓäÁà¸ÍäÁèÁÒÅèÐ/tham-mai-ther-mâi-maa-lâ/why don’t you come?”, this question is present, but “·ÓäÁà¸ÍäÁèä´éÁÒÅèÐ/tham-mai-ther-mâi-dâi-maa-lâ/why didn’t you come?”, this one is in the past. If you want your question to mean something to happen in the future, just put “¨Ð/jà” in front of verbs you use such as “·ÓäÁà¸Í¨ÐäÁèÁÒÅèÐ/tham-mai-ther-jà-mâi-maa-lâ/why won’t you come?”, or “·ÓäÁà¸Í¨ÐäÁèä»ÅèÐ/tham-mai-ther-jà-mâi-bpai-lâ/why won’t you go?”, or “·ÓäÁà¸Í¨Ðµéͧ仴éÇÂÅèÐ/tham-mai-ther-jà-tông-bpai-dûay-lâ/why will you have to go?”,  etc. I will give you some example as below: Q: à¸Íä»·Ó§Ò¹·Ø¡ÇѹÃÖà»ÅèÒ / ther-bpai-tham-ngaan-thúg-wan-rú-plào /Do you go to work every day? what do you do for a living? ·ÓÁÒËÒ¡Ô¹ÍÐäáѹ¨êÐ Today we will talk about career and making sentences as Thai people like to say it.   Thais might say “What do you do in winter?/ nâa-năaw-ther-tham-a-rai/˹éÒ˹ÒÇà¸Í·ÓÍÐäÔ but “What will you do this winter?/ nâa-năaw-née-ther-jà-tham-a-rai/ ˹éÒ˹ÒǹÕéà¸Í¨Ð·ÓÍÐäÔ You will see that the first question is about something someone does regularly then the second question is about something someone will do by the time mentioned. what are you doing? ·ÓÍÐäáѹà¹ÕèÂ... Last time I told you about present simple. Right here it’s time to talk about present continuous. Are you ready to be absorbed? When we, Thai people, want to ask questions as someone is doing something, we end it with “ÍÂÙè” or “ÍÂÙè¹èД or “ÍÂÙèÅèД or “ÍÂÙèàËÃÍ”. For example: Q: à¸Í¡ÓÅѧ·ÓÍÐäÃÍÂÙè/ther-gam-lang-tham-a-rai-yòo/ what are you doing? A: ÍëÍ ©Ñ¹¡ÓÅѧ´Ù·ÕÇÕÍÂÙè/ŏrr-chăn-gam-lang-doo-thee-wee-yòo/Well, I am watching TV. Q: à¢Ò·ÓÍÐäÃÍÂÙèÅèÐ/kăo-tham-a-rai-yòo-lâ/ what is he doing? A: à¢Ò·èͧµÓÃÒ»ÃÐÇѵÔÈÒʵÃìÍÂÙè/ kăo-thông-tam-raa-pra-wàt-sàat-yòo/ he is studying history. Q: ¾Ç¡à¢Ò¡Ô¹ÍÐäáѹÍÂÙè¹èÐ/pûak-kăo-gin-a-rai-gan-yòo-nâ/ what are they eating? A: ¾Ç¡à¢Ò¡ÓÅѧ¡Ô¹ÊéÁµÓ¡Ñ¹ÍÂÙè/ pûak-kăo-gam-lang-gin-sôm-tam-gan-yòo/ they are eating papaya salad. When it is about places, we would say “¡ÓÅѧ¨Ðä»...” or “¨Ðä»...” or “ä»...¹èД. For example: Q: à¸Í¡ÓÅѧ¨Ðä»ä˹àËÃÍ/ther-gam-lang-ja-bpai-năi-rĕuh/ where are you going? A: ©Ñ¹¡ÓÅѧ¨Ðä»ËÒËÁ͹èÐ/chăn-gam-lang-ja-bpai-hăa-mŏrr-nâ/I am going to see the doctor. Q: ä»ä˹àËÃÍ/bpai-năi-rĕuh/ where are you going? A: ÍëÍ ä»¡Ô¹¢éÒǹèÐ/ ŏrr-bpai-gin-kâw-nâ/ Well, I am going to have some food. Q: ¾Ç¡à¸Í¨Ðä»ä˹¡Ñ¹/ pûak-ther-ja-bpai-năi-gan/ where are you guys going? Remark-  “¹èÐ/nâ” or “ÅèÐ/lâ” or “àËÃÍ/rĕuh” are used with friends or someone you  know well.              -  You should end your sentences or questions with “¤èÐ/khâ” or “¤ÃѺ/ kráb” if people you talk to are older or just to show your respect. how you know that it was in the past... There are some foreigners who don’t know how Thai use tenses which make sense. I think they might make sense just for Thais. Join me and see how it works for you. Now I am starting to talk about past simple, we put the word “maa/ÁÒ”at the end of the sentences to show for it. For example: Q: à¸Íä»ä˹ÁÒ/ther-bpai-năi-maa/where did you go? A: ©Ñ¹ä»¡Ô¹ÍÒËÒÃàÂç¹ÁÒ/ chăn-bpai-gin-aa-hăan-yen-maa/I went to have dinner. Q: àÁ×èͤ׹à¸Íä»·ÓÍÐäÃÁÒ/mûeh-khuen-ther-bpai-tham-a-rai-maa/what did you do last night? A: àÁ×èͤ׹©Ñ¹ä»´Ù˹ѧÁÒ/ mûeh-khuen-chăn-bpai-doo-năng-maa/Last night I watched a movie. Or we add “dâi/ä´é” in the sentences so others will know that we mention something in the past. For example: Q: à¸Íä´é仴٤͹àÊÔÃìµÃÖà»ÅèÒ/ther-dâi-bpai-doo-cohn-sèrt-rue-plào/did you go to see the concert? A: à»ÅèÒ äÁèä´éä»/ plào-mâi-dâi-bpai/No, I didn’t. Q: ÇѹàÊÒÃì·ÕèáÅéÇà¸ÍÍÂÙèºéÒ¹ÃÖà»ÅèÒ/wan-săo-thêe-láew-ther-yòo-baan-rú-plào/were you at home last Saturday? A: à»ÅèÒ äÁèä´éÍÂÙèËÃÍ¡/plào-mâi-dâi-yòo-ròrg/No, I wasn’t. get to the point...shall we? Hi there, my dear farangs, I am back. Right now I just want to let you see some phrases which you may hear them a lot. And sometimes Thai people make Thai language more difficult to understand because they use it differently. Let's see how they speak and how you can pick it. When they say"à¢éÒã¨ÁÑêÂ/khâo-jai-mái/understand?", your reply might be "äÁèà¢éÒã¨/mâi-khâo-jai/don’t understand", or "äÁèà¢éÒã¨àÅÂ/mâi-khâo-jai-loey/don’t understand at all", or "¡çà¢éÒ㨺éÒ§/khôrr-khâo-jai-bâang/yeah, I understand some.", or "à¢éÒ㨺éÒ§ äÁèà¢éÒ㨺éÒ§ / khâo-jai-bâang-mâi-khâo-jai-bâang /some I do, some I don’t", or "à¢éÒã¨áÅéÇ/khâo-jai-láew/yeah, I got it.", etc. What you need to pick for answering is the main word and this one is"à¢éÒã¨/khâo-jai-/understand".  As you hear "ÃÙéÁÑêÂ/rú-mái/Do you know that(it)?", your answer could be "äÁèÃÙé/mâi-rú/No, I don’t or don’t know", or "äÁèÃÙéàÅÂ/mâi-rú-loey/don’t know at all", or "äÁèÃÙéÍÐäÃÁÒ¡/mâi-rú-a-rai-mâag/don’t know much", or "äÁèÃÙéÍÐäÃàÅÂ/ mâi-rú-a-rai-loey/don’t know anything at all", or "¡çÃÙéºéÒ§/ khôrr- rú-bâang/yeah, I know some.", or "ÃÙéáÅéÇ/ rú-láew/yeah, I knew or yeah, I heard about it.", or something else. For Thais, to know is "ÃÙé/rú/know something or about something" and "ÃÙé¨Ñ¡/ rú-jàg/know persons or places or things". If someone asks you "ÃÙé¨Ñ¡ÁÑêÂ/rú-jàg-mái/Do you know that(person or place or thing)?", you might respond "äÁèÃÙé¨Ñ¡/mâi-rú-jàg /No, I don’t.", or "äÁèÃÙé¨Ñ¡àÅÂ/ mâi-rú-jàg-loey/ don’t know (person or place or thing) at all.", or "ÃÙé¨Ñ¡áµèäÁèÁÒ¡/ rú-jàg-tàeh-mâi-mâag /yeah but not much.", or "ÃÙé¨Ñ¡áÅéÇ/ rú-jàg-láew /yeah, I knew him/her/them or yeah, I knew that place/that thing.", or just say "äÁèá¹è㨤ÃѺ(¤èÐ)/ mâi-nâeh-jai-kráb(khâ) /I am not sure."   Right here I am showing you how to have your conversation on the right track and I believe it is not that hard to remember or understand. Q: Do you know that?  A: ¡çÃÙé¹Ð/ khôrr-rú-ná/yeah, sort of. Q: Do you like it?  A: ¡çªÍº¹Ð/ khôrr-chôb-ná /I kind of like it Q: Do you understand (me/that/it)?  A: ¡çà¢éÒ㨹Ðáµè…/ khôrr-khâo-jai-ná-tàeh.../I understand that but... Q: What will we do tonight?  A: ¡Ô¹¢éÒÇ áÅéÇ¡ç´Ù˹ѧ/ gin-kâw-láew-khôrr-doo-năng/have some food then (or and) see a movie Q: Do you remember my boss?  A: ¨Óä´é áÅéÇä§/ jam-dâi-láew-ngai/Yes. So?
