EXCLUSIVE 'MEMORY AND HUMANITY' TRACK BY TRACK BY MATTHEW DAVIES

Track 1: Rules And Games
"The media has made an aggressive standpoint on targeting current rock acts as the reasons behind the current fears that the youth of today are becoming more involved in self-harming and suicide. We all know these claims are just a way of passing the buck to divert us away from the real issues.

This took some shaping from the early demo to get it just right and all it came down to was some simple arranging to let the song move better."

Track 2: To Die Like Mouchette
"Inspiration can come from all kinds of sources: books, music, art, photography, real life...anything. If you've never seen the 1967 film Mouchette by Robert Bresson, then I suggest you go and check it out. It's such a tragic story about human struggle, it really inspired me to try to capture that human element with this song. I don't think there's ever been a more tragic story committed to film."

Track 3: Kicking And Screaming
"The new single. A song about growing up in the valleys of South Wales, probably the most autobiographical and innocent song on the record. We wrote the majority of the music for this during our tour of mainland Europe in October 2007, on the bus and in hotel rooms."

Track 4: Constant Illuminations
"I think during the writing of Tales Don't Tell Themselves, we'd all become really tired and bored of heavy, aggressive music and couldn't really get inspired to write in that sort of style anymore. I think we just forgot what it was that made us fall in love with heavy music in the first place. This song reminded us what we loved about all our favorite hard rock bands growing up and how exciting the riff could be. Not only that, but how powerful aggressive vocals can be when used in the right context and not just as a gimmick."

Track 5: Maybe I Am?
"Did I ever mention that I once got asked to change some of my lyrics because the suits thought they were too intelligence for the kids? Give the youth of today some credit!"

Track 6: You Can't See The Forest For The Wolves
I think you can interpret the words of this song in many ways. On one hand, it is a song about creative independence, and on the other it's a song about not being fed information that media hands to us to devour every day. It's about making up your own mind and seeing the real truths, not the ones told to us via a corporate interference. Also, the riffs in the verse are insane, who said that we'd lost our touch?"

Track 7: Building
"A song about belief and what is truly waiting for us at the end. This is quite a simple song and probably my favorite lyrical moment on the record."

Track 8: Beneath The Burning Tree
"The romantic idea and notion of love and understanding being dirtied by the irresponsible use of sexual control and empowerment for personal gain. Started from an idea that Darran [Smith, guitar] had then we all got our greasy fingers on it and shaped it into this tune. I really love the two guitars firing off at each other in the mid-section."

Track 9: Someday The Fire...
"I think this was one of the first songs that was completed for the record from a bunch of ideas we had compiled during the last few tours of 2007. I remember thrashing the verse and chorus ideas around my house on a mini-Martin acoustic guitar that I love to write with. The chorus really shone even on acoustic and the guys really liked where the song was going, so we sat down together and worked on a middle section and pre-chorus idea until it clicked.

The song ifself is about the power of words and how they can change the way you see the simplest of things."

Track 10: Waterfront Dance Club
"The loss of innocence and what it is to accept the inevitable, a song about addiction, an addiction for life and the fear of letting go.

It was one of the first batch of songs we wrote for the record and it turned out to be very powerful."

Track 11: Charlie Don't Surf
"Another Funeral record and another song about the education system in some shape and form! It's also a song about getting older, which is beautifully accented by the summery breeze feel of the song."

Track 12: Ghosts
"When a topic strikes me, I can write so many lyrics and words on the subject. I don't remember what it was that I saw on the television, but whatever it was, it sparked my determination to write a song about the pain and suffering of child abuse and the ways we as a society refuse to fully acknowledge those who truly need to confide in someone so that they can begin to overcome their fears and difficult lives.

I was adamant that I would present these words as a call for understanding, and for those ears that are closed by ignorance to be opened with understanding and a determination to not let these acts of abuse continue."

Track 13: Constant Resurrections
"This song is the counterpoint to Constant Illumination, but whereas that song is an angry attack, this is a more restrained, reflective look on the loss of innocence and how we choose to ignore the important issues and events that go on around us.

This song came about through a jam session that we had while Kris [Coombes-Roberts, guitar] was travelling down to the writing sessions. I picked up the guitar and started playing the little guitar part, Gareth [Ellis-Davies, bass] started the movement into the chorus section and we put the music down using either Garage Band or Logic and waited for Kris to have a listen. He really liked it and added a complimentary guitar part along with mine and Darran's then Ryan [Richards, drums] added some really cool synth and loops to really liven it up. It's such a haunting song."
