Limited/Production/Revolver Nationals where I shot Production Division. This was my first handgun nationals and I had high hopes, in fact a little too high. I was talking with a local GM who thought I could place in the top 20... well little did I know that there were 21 GMs and 28 Master Class shooters in production division at the nationals. I was classified an "A" class shooter at the time of the match and pretty much set myself up to fail at the goal of placing top 20 with 49 shooters classified ahead of me. I did however, do well enough to take 33rd place overall, which is well inside the top two divisions above me, and finished 1st A class. I was very happy with the results, but the shooting itself didn't feel like my best. Looking back on the video, it was pretty damn fast and I can only find a few places I could have done better, all on things I haven't practiced much.
On day 1 I felt a demotivated when the shooting was all over, I had already shot 4 no-shoots and 3 misses. Those that know me, know that I don't shoot no-shoots anymore and misses are few and far between, usually only on swingers (which my two were, the other was on a No-shoot)
I tried not to let that get me down, but day 2 I was still trying to keep up with the majority of the limited division shooters on my squad and doing quite well at it, but at the cost of some extra C hits. I didn't feel like my hits were all there, and my times were slower than I wanted. I wanted to be in the GM times of 32 round stages in the 16-18 second range, but ended up more in the 21-25 second range... a little lofty and had I stopped to realize who I really am and what I'm was capable of at the time, I would have been very happy with myself.
Day 3 I really zoned in. I realized I was shooting the limited gun game, and I needed to be shooting the production gun game, which is 90% or better alphas. I tuned in and did what I'm good at, punching alphas in paper. I finished strong and on an upward beat, wanting to shoot the whole nationals again.
It was a great experience and it motivated me to practice more, shoot better and come back for another win next year.
