This was my "first" grown-up girl magazine and I still share a fondness for it and usually buy it at least three or four times a year. My guess is in order to keep the cover price down, the mag is trying to cut corners on other importent areas like--paper quality. The magazine is printed on a lower quality paper than most--decreasing its' durability and readability. Also, let's face it--some of the writing is just not up to the same level of many competing magazines. The articles seem repetitive, simple-minded and without a lot of useful information. It's weird that most of these other reviews are concerned with subscription problems. I just moved to the city last year, and subscribed to both Time Out New York and New York magazine. After about a month, I found myself tossing out TONY, which with its papery material feels more like a TV guide to me, and instead carrying my copy of New York everywhere I go. While TONY is more comprehensive about local events (i.e. readings, concerts, theatre, movies, etc.), New York magazine focuses more on New York culture and news, and especially emphasizing the media's current focus. For instance, last week's issue had Caroline Kennedy on the cover. I've learned to trust NYMag's restaurant selections, and the reviews tend to be detailed and useful. Every week, it lists new openings or reopenings of restaurants, along with general critic's picks, which I've found very useful. The layout of the magazine is also very friendly and endearing. There's the approval matrix of people and things that are currently in or out of favor, the culture pages, and even events for kids, not to mention the least, my favorite -- the weekly crossword puzzle, which I actually like more than the NYtimes's. (I sent the following letter to their customer service last week) After about 15 years of getting your magazine, I have decided not to renew my subscription. It is a shame that your once great publication has become such a joke. After receiving your November issue, and spending 10 minutes removing all the inserts and gimmick ads so I could actually read it, I found no substance. Instead there is a fashion section (yikes), a `hot list' with young barely dressed men and women (hey I'm not against a little sex and skin, but I'll subscribe to Vogue or Maxim for that), an article about Larry David's wife that might as well have come from People magazine, an Aussie travelogue that I am convinced their tourist board paid for, all sandwiched in between so many ads for monster SUVs and other crap that you need a compass and a map just to keep up with where the articles worth reading continue from one page to the next. What happened to the great writers like Krakauer? What happened to having any environmental conscience? Where are the stories of adventure that are real and make you want to go there? Maybe I am just getting older than your current demographic. I haven't lost my sense of adventure, which is why I live in Durango CO and spend a lot of time outdoors. I used to look to your magazine for inspiration. Now I half expect the cover to tout stories on `killer abs'. You've become the Clear Channel of the outdoor magazine world. It has good, practical information for the entrepreneur and small business owner, as well as anyone who is interested in business. Unlike other business magazines that contain articles that are long and ponderous, Inc. doesn't waste your time with tedium. Its sister publication, Fast Company, is also good. Two reviewers gave this magazine low ratings because they hadn't received their first issue after 4 weeks. Look, it CLEARLY states: "Availability: The first issue should arrive in 6-10 weeks." That means the first issue should arrive between 1� and 2� months after the order is placed.
