- South Korea on August 7, 2016 rejected China's criticism over the planned deployment in the South of a US anti-missile system, saying Beijing's failure to curb its ally North Korea had created the situation.

- The US, South Korean and Japanese defense ministers condemned the launches as "provocative acts" that posed "a serious threat to peace and stability." In July 2016, North Korea launched a ballistic missile that launched in Japanese-controlled waters for the first time. 

- Japan protests against Chinese radar unit near disputed waters because Tokyo fears that Beijing intends to use gas exploration platforms as military stations. On August 7, 2016, Japan issued another protest to Beijing after Chinese coastguard ship and about 230 fishing vessels sailed close to what Tokyo considers its territorial waters in the East China Sea.
