With the rise of popularity of messenger bags, many kids have started to want one. While parents are usually not hesitant to purchase a messenger bag for their child, the problem arises when kids want a leather one.
Leather messenger bag is undoubtedly much more attractive than almost any other messenger bag and it is no wonder that kids want something like that for themselves. The problem here is that these messenger bags are much more costly than regular bags. When you search online for kids messenger bag, you will 99% of the time not find any leather ones. Reason for that is that kids and leather usually do not mix well. Anyone who has paid a hefty price for leather messenger bag will try to take the best care of her as possible. Kids do not operate under that assumption, they see the bag as one of many "things to play with". They appreciate how cool the bag looks, they appreciate the usefulness of said bag in school but they generally do not appreciate it enough to take utmost care with it. They will stuff the leather bag in their locker just like any ordinary bag or a backpack.
So, the question arises, if kids will not take proper care of the bag and the bag will most likely get destroyed, is it worth it? This question you will have to answer for yourself, no one can give you a definite answer on this matter.
Not being able to give you an answer on this does not mean i cannot help you with deciding. You know your kid the best, if you know for sure that he or she will take care of the bag properly, then yes, it is worth it. Usually, you cannot tell how the child will look on the bag. What you need to know here is that there are models of leather messenger bags that even without being cared for will retain their beauty and functionality. You want the most durable bag as possible, you want the leather to be quality one. This might sound counter-productive, paying for a high quality bag which might get damaged. The point here is that old and worn messenger bag can look even cooler than the new one. So, if you manage to find one of those bags, then yes it is worth purchasing it for your child.
I would advise you to search for vintage leather bags, pay special attention to those that are almost "ruined", which means that they lived through a lot. Then mark the craftsmanship of the bag, the seams, the stitches and everything that endured the test of time. Now, try to search for bags that are made similarly to those. If you search long enough, you are bound to find a bag that will both please your child and alleviate your concerns about being destroyed.
There is another option as well, you can just buy the lowest quality leather bag and see how your kid will react to it. There are not many kids that can distinguish quality leather bag from less quality one. So your kid will be happy about getting his new shiny bag and you will be able to discern if he/she will take proper care of it. If it gets destroyed, you just saved yourself some money on not buying a quality one. If it does not get destroyed, you are safe to buy a real quality bag that will stay in your family and which your child can pass on to his child one day.
