ลักษณะทั่วไป

แมลงตดBombardierBeetle เป็นแมลงปีกแข็งชนิดหนึ่งจำพวกเดียวกันกับด้วงดิน ลำตัวยาวประมาณสองเซนติเมตรกว้างประมาณห้าถึงแปดมิลลิเมตร ชนิดที่พบในประเทศไทยมีสองชนิด คือ Pherosophus javanus และ Pherosophus occipitalisโดยสารพิษของแมลงตดมีคุณสมบัติเป็นกรด ประกอบด้วย ไฮโดรควินโนน และ ไฮโดรเจนเปอร์ออกไซด์เมื่อเจอศัตรูคุกคาม หรือเพื่อจับเหยื่อเป็นอาหารแมลงตดจะพ่นสารพิษอันตรายนี้เข้าใส่เป้าหมายทำให้สัตว์ที่เป็นเป้าหมายขนาดเล็กตายได้ และเมื่อโดนผิวหนัง เช่นผิวหนังมนุษย์จะทำให้เกิดรอยไหม้ ปวดแสบปวดร้อน หากโดนเข้าที่ดวงตาอาจทำให้ตาบอดได้(เพราะฉะนั้นเด็กๆไม่ควรไปยุ่งกับแมลงตดนะครับขอบอก)

ชีวิตและความเป็นอยู่

แมลงตดอาศัยอยู่บนบกตามริมน้ำ แอ่งน้ำ ซุกซ่อนตัวอยู่ตามใบไม้ กิ่งไม้ เปลือกไม้แห้ง กินแมลงชนิดอื่นๆรวมทั้งเพลี๊ยต่างๆเป็นอาหาร ส่วนมากวางไข่เป็นกลุ่มอยู่ตามโพรงดินกาบไม้แห้งต่างๆ

ความอ่อนโยนสามารถสยบความแข็งกร้าว

เป็นประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้เขียนที่เคยได้สัมผัสกับตัวแมลงตด คือถ้าเราเข้าหาเขาแบบแข็งๆกระด้างๆ ถื้อๆเขาจะไม่เล่นกับเราและพร้อมจู่โจมพ่นพิษใส่เราทันที แบบไม่รีรอแต่เมื่อไรก็ตามที่เราเข้ามาแบบมิตร ใช้ความอ่อนโยนสยบความแข็งกร้าววางมือลงกับพื้นแล้วให้เขาไต่ลงมาเองและเราก็ไม่สบัดมือหรือไม่บีบเขาแค่นั้นคุณก็จะปลอดภัยและไม่ต้องเสี่ยงว่าตาจะบอดได้(แต่แนะนำใส่แว่นตากันไว้เหอะน่ะ) อีกวิธีคือให้เขาใต่บนกิ่งไม้เล็กๆก่อน แล้วค่อยเอาเขามาวางที่มือคุณก็จะปลอดภัยอีกเช่นกัน

General characteristics
