มีการเล่นกีฬาที่คล้ายกับฟุตบอลซึ่งเรียกว่า”ซือ-ซู” (Tsu-Chu) ซึ่งหมายถึงการเตะลูกหนังด้วยเท้ากีฬาชนิดนี้ได้รับความนิยมอย่างกว้างขวางซึ่งนักประพันธ์และนักประวัติศาสตร์ในสมัยนั้นได้ยกย่องผู้เล่นที่มีชื่อเสียงให้เป็นวีรบุรุษของชาติและในสมัยเดียวกันได้มีการเล่นคล้ายฟุตบอลในประเทศญี่ปุ่นอีกด้วย

ในปี พ.ศ. 2400 สโมสรฟุตบอลได้ก่อตั้งเป็นครั้งแรกที่เมืองเซนพัสด์ประเทศอังกฤษวันที่26 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2406 สโมสรฟุตบอล 11แห่งได้มารวมกันที่กรุงลอนดอนเพื่อก่อตั้งสมาคมฟุตบอลขึ้นซึ่งถือเป็นรากฐานในการกำเนิดสมาคมแห่งชาติ จนถึง 140 สมาคมและทำให้ผู้เล่นฟุตบอลต้องเล่นตามกฎและกติกาของสมาคมฟุตบอล จนเวลาผ่านไปจากคำว่า Associationก็ย่อเป็น Assoc และกลายเป็น Soccer ขึ้นในที่สุด ซึ่งนิยมเรียกกันในประเทศอังกฤษ แต่ชาวอเมริกันเรียกว่า Footballหมายถึง American football

อินเดียเป็นประเทศแรกที่เริ่มเล่นฟุตบอลศาสตราจารย์จากวิทยาลัยกัลกัตตาเป็นผู้นำสำเนากฎหมายการเล่นมาเผยแพร่ในปีพ.ศ. 2426และในปี พ.ศ. 2435ได้มีการแข่งขันชิงถ้วยรางวัลเป็นครั้งแรกในทวีปซึ่งยังไม่มีชื่อเสียงในด้านการเล่นฟุตบอลกีฬาชนิดนี้ก็ได้เริ่มมีการเล่นมาก่อนร่วมร้อยปีแล้ว เช่นสมาคมฟุตบอลแห่งนิวเซาท์เวลส์ ได้ถูกตั้งขึ้นในออสเตรเลีย ปี พ.ศ. 2425 และสมาคมฟุตบอลของนิวซีแลนด์ได้ถูกตั้งขึ้นหลังจากนั้น 9 ปี
