Human Growth Hormone - Lose Weight, Build Muscle, Look Younger - Really?
The Human Growth Hormone (HGH) has received a lot of press in recent years. We've heard of olympic athletes and sports celebrities using it to supposedly boost their performance. The Olympics and many major league sports leagues have even banned its use. HGH is also making headlines for other benefits as well. Some of these are weight loss, anti-aging properties, muscle growth, even making people taller! So, is all the info about Human Growth Hormone hype to sell us dietary supplements and anti-aging creams or is it really true?
What is HGH?
Human Growth Hormone is a complex peptide hormone, naturally produced by everyone. HGH is produced in the pituitary gland, you know that gland we all learned about in health class as kids that has a lot to do with puberty, and is critical to growth and development in kids. While it is produced in greater quantities during our youth (peaking in our teens and decreasing sharply in our 30s), our bodies continue to make it all our lives. It helps maintain several bodily functions like muscle growth, energy, tissue repair, brain function, bone strength, healing, and metabolism.
Uses of Human Growth Hormone
Sounds great right? If it does all that stuff, gimmie some more it has to be good for me! Many people use a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in 1990 that had some promising results as proof that increasing HGH can have beneficial effects. That study showed subjects gaining fairly significant muscle mass and losing weight by injecting synthetic HGH and without changing diet or exercise. Other studies have shown obese people have lower amounts of HGH and some think that increasing the hormone may facilitate weight loss.
Right on, bring on the HGH! However, subsequent studies have not produced similar data, There is also reason to believe that people are misinterpreting the results of the 1990 study. In fact, later (in 2003) the New England Journal of Medicine actually denounced the misuse of the study. Man, just when we thought we had something!
HGH's most famous reputation is a muscle builder and athletic performance enhancer. The NCAA and the Olympic committee have banned its use. The same 1990 study is often referenced to prove that HGH helps build muscle; a positive thing in most sports. These claims have not been supported in other studies. One thing HGH may be useful for is injury repair.
There are also lots of products and websites that say HGH can have anti-aging properties. Those claims are as controversial as all the others.
Side Effects
Everything we put in our body has side effects. Some are positive, some are negative, and some are neutral. If I drink caffeine I get a short buzz, enough to get me in to work, that's a side effect. If I eat too much at dinner I feel bloated and sleepy, that's a side effect. So, what are the potential side effects of using Human Growth Hormone? You know those super fast talking guys at the end of drug commercials? Well pretend I'm talking fast as you read these.
Significant swelling in the extremities (arms and legs) - Fluid retention
Symptoms of diabetes - some say it contributes to the disease for folks who are already predisposed to it (that's particularly nasty).
Higher blood pressure
Nerve, joint, and muscle pain
The fluid retention and diabetes symptoms may also contribute to heart disease.
So, is there any hype out there about the benefits of Human Growth Hormone? Absolutely. These days what isn't hyped? If it has even a little bit of perceived benefit somebody is going to oversell it. However, just because something is hyped doesn't mean there isn't a good use for it. I understand HGH supplementation can be very beneficial for folks who have a natural deficiency. There may be other benefits that we don't know about and a good thing about the hype is people will spend more time researching it. I think the jury is sill out but I'm not running out to buy some HGH weight loss pills just yet.
