แบ่งตามโครงสร้างของลำตัวกีต้าร์(Body) อาจแบ่งได้เป็น 3 ชนิด คือ กีต้าร์ตัวตัน (Solid Body) หมายถึงกีต้าร์ไฟฟ้าปกติที่ลำตัวมีลักษณะตันไม่มีการเจาะช่องในลำตัวกีต้าร์เหมือนอย่างกีตาร์โปร่ง หรือ อะคูสติกกีตาร์แต่บริเวณลำตัวจะมีตัวรับสัญญาณแรงสั่นสะเทือนของสายกีต้าร์ (Pick Up) ขณะที่ดีด เพื่อส่งต่อไปยังเครื่องขยายเสียง (Amplifier) ต่อไป โดยทั่วไป ตัวรับสัญญาณจะมี 2 ประเภท คือตัวรับสัญญาณแบบแถวเดี่ยวที่เรียกว่า Single Coil และแบบแถวคู่ที่เรียกว่าHumbucker 

กีต้าร์ลำตัวกึ่งโปร่ง (Semi-Hallow Body) เป็นกีต้าร์ไฟฟ้าที่มีลักษณะโครงสร้างส่วนกลางของลำตัวในแนวเดียวกับคอกีต้าร์มีลักษณะตัน (แต่มีการเจาะช่องเพื่อใส่ตัวรับสัญญาณแรงสั่นสะเทือนของสายกีต้าร์ (PickUp) เช่นเดียวกับกีต้าร์ตัวตัน)บริเวณส่วนข้างของกีต้าร์มีการเจาะช่อง (Sound Hole) เอาไว้เพื่อให้เกิดการกำทอนของเสียงมากกว่ากีต้าร์ตัวตันซึ่งจะให้เสียงที่เป็นอคูสติกมากขึ้น นิยมใช้ในดนตรีแจ๊สหรือบลูส์เป็นกีต้าร์ที่ผลิตขึ้นมาเพื่อลดเสียงรบกวนที่เรียกว่าFeed back ซึ่งเกิดจากกีต้าร์ไฟฟ้าลำตัวโปร่ง (กล่าวคือยังมีเสียงรบกวนบ้างแต่น้อยลงกว่าเดิม) 

กีต้าร์ลำตัวโปร่ง (Hallow Body) กีต้าร์ไฟฟ้าที่มีการเจาะช่องเอาไว้เพื่อให้เกิดการกำทอนของเสียง (SoundHole) เช่นเดียวกับกีต้าร์โปร่งหรืออคูสติกและกีต้าร์ลำตัวกึ่งโปร่ง ปกติช่องดังกล่าวมักจะอยู่ด้านข้างของลำตัวกีต้าร์เนื่องจากบริเวณกลางลำตัวจะมีการใส่ตัวรับสัญญาณแรงสั่นสะเทือนของสายกีต้าร์ (PickUp) เช่นเดียวกันกับกีต้าร์ตัวตัน ซึ่งผลของการที่มีช่องกำทอนเสียงทำให้ลักษณะของเนื้อเสียงที่ได้เป็นอคูสติกมากกว่า กีต้าร์ Semi-HallowBody แต่หากขยายเสียงให้ดังมากจะก่อให้เกิดเสียงรบกวนที่เรียกว่า Feedback กีต้าร์ประเภทนี้มักจะนิยมใช้กับดนตรีแจ๊สหรือบลูส์เป็นส่วนใหญ่
