Bismarckia nobilis palm

Bismarckia is a monotypic genus of flowering plant in thepalm family endemic to western and northern Madagascar where they grow in opengrassland. The genus is named for the first chancellor of the German EmpireOtto von Bismarck and the epithet for its only species, Bismarckia nobilis, comes from Latin for 'noble'.
Bismarck Palm grows from solitary trunks, gray to tan incolor, which show ringed indentations from old leaf bases. Trunks are 30 to 45cm in diameter, slightly bulging at the base, and free of leaf bases in all butits youngest parts. In their natural habitat they can reach above 25 meters inheight but usually get no taller than 12 m in cultivation. The nearly roundedleaves are enormous in maturity, over 3 m wide, and are divided to a third itslength into 20 or more stiff, once-folded segments, themselves split on theends. The leaves are induplicate and costapalmate, producing a wedge-shapedhastula where the blade and petiole meet. Petioles are 2–3 m, slightly armed, and are covered in a white wax as well as cinnamon-colored caducous scales; thenearly-spherical leaf crown is 7.5 m wide and 6 m tall. Most cultivatedBismarckias feature silver-blue foliage although a green leaf variety exists(which is less hardy to cold). Thesepalms are dioecious and produce pendent, interfoliar inflorescences of smallbrown flowers which, in female plants, mature to a brown ovoid drupe, eachcontaining a single seed.

Phoenix dactylifera palm

Phoenix dactylifera (date palm) is a palm in the genusPhoenix, cultivated for its edible sweet fruit. Although its place of origin isunknown because of long cultivation, it probably originated from lands aroundIraq. It grows 70–75 feet in height growing singly or forming a clump withseveral stems from a single root system. The leaves are 4–6 m long, with spineson the petiole, and pinnate, with about 150 leaflets; the leaflets are 30 cmlong and 2 cm wide. The full span of the crown ranges from 6 to 10 m. Datescontain 20–70 calories each, depending on size and species.
Date palms can take 4 to 8 years after planting before theywill bear fruit, and produce viable yields for commercial harvest between 7 to10 years. Mature date palms can produce 80–120 kilograms of dates per harvestseason, although they do not all ripen at the same time so several harvests arerequired. In order to get fruit of marketable quality, the bunches of datesmust be thinned and bagged or covered before ripening so that the remainingfruits grow larger and are protected from weather and pests such as birds.
