How to write and defend a dissertation

The dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Education and Science must contain scientific or applied results that represent an original contribution to science. The dissertation must show that the candidate possesses in-depth theoretical knowledge of the relevant specialty and the capacity for independent scientific research. The dissertation shall be devoted to a complex and comprehensive elucidation of a specific scientific or scientific-applied problem. It is not permissible to present as a dissertation mechanically unified divergent research.

The dissertation shall be developed in the framework of a full-time or PaperWriter part-time doctoral programme or as an independent doctoral programme, which must include a research and an educational component.

The results of the research included in the dissertation must be reflected in at least two publications in scientific journals (printed or accepted for publication, the latter being certified by a document from the editor or publisher), with the candidate being the lead author of at least one publication. For doctoral programmes started after 31 December 2010, at least one publication must have been printed or accepted for publication in an international journal with impact factor.

Upon entry to the PhD programme, the PhD student must submit an annotated statement of the thesis topic to his/her supervisor and the departmental board. The annotated application shall contain a brief justification of the requested topic of 1 standard page with the stated aims and objectives of the thesis and a basic bibliography on the topic. Within six months of the start of the PhD period, the PhD student, the supervisor and the Department Chair must make a reasoned proposal for the topic and the main lines of the thesis and an individual study plan to the relevant Faculty Board.

When submitting the dissertation for departmental consideration, the doctoral candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge and skills in his/her text:

  • Have formulated and constructed a logical thesis;
  • Have researched and systematized the existing literature;
  • Have compiled a detailed standard bibliography on the chosen topic;
  • Apply a methodology appropriate to the research.

The aim of the thesis should be precisely and specifically formulated, and the stages of the research should be presented as separate tasks. A clear and concise statement of the research problem to be investigated should be made, along with a set of well-defined research hypotheses, assumptions, or questions that the research should pose. Since determining the most appropriate methods is not always easy, doctoral students should be able to justify the chosen method with an appropriate rationale for each particular case.

The dissertation may have a mixed methodology writing a research paper using methods of different scientific fields. PhD students should demonstrate that the methods used have been chosen through a deliberate process of consideration and that the criteria, and the positives and negatives of the individual choice of method, are well defined. The methods, the materials collected and processed, and the sequence of the studies conducted in the dissertation must be accurately and precisely described so as to allow a clear understanding of the nature of the research conducted, as well as its future replication by other scholars.
