MEMO – How Come Seeharaj C: Jan 17, 2005 .
It is called “How Come” because I feel that all of you will ask, “How come he wrote this Memo?” Well, the answer is about attitude.
Attitude frames your believe, your believe frames your thinking, your thinking leads to your action and your action is your work. Believe it or not, you and I still have jobs because there are still problems for us to fix. If there is no more problem, then we will have no job. More often than not, I heard people said “This problem can’t be fixed this way because it has so many obstacles i.e. no spaces, no times, no supports and so on”. If you start approaching any problems/solutions that way, you will get into a dead end and you will get nothing out of this thinking process, no work is done. Why? It’s because your brain already believe that it should not be done and you are trying to find the reasons to support it. Attitude is that important, you start with the different attitude, you will get different outcome.
I just write this memo based on the fact that I would like to share them. Like I said, I just want to share them, they are no right and wrong. It’s just my own thinking about attitude.
1. The “Should” Attitude
The first thing you should do when you face any problems is asking, “SHOULD we do something about the problem?” If the answer is YES, then next question is, “What SHOULD we do to fix it?” These two questions are very important to frame your attitude (which will lead to your work, remember?). They will give you the WHY and the WHAT. Once you believe it’s the right thing to do and you should do it, then you will spend your brain and energy to find the way to do it. The rest will only be problems waiting to be solved. By the way, this is when you should discuss/argue/brain storm/think out of boxes with your colleagues/bosses/subordinates. Nail it down right here on “What/Why SHOULD we do it?”
2. The “Can do” Attitude
This is so common nowadays. It even becomes a cliché in my opinion, so much that I feel people don’t really know what it means and abuse it. Yes, abuse it, by saying YES to everything. The “CAN DO” is different from a “YES” man. A “YES” man says YES to everything with/without thinking about what’s needed to support the YES. A “CAN DO” man says we CAN DO everything providing we have enough resources. As a result, the CAN DO promotes thinking and discussion. It is working out the problem not hiding it by saying YES.
Last but not least, CAN DO is a good attitude to have to get things done, however, you must CAN DO things that SHOULD be done only… Just think about it.
3. The “Just do it” Attitude
No, it’s not NIKE. It’s about not being procrastination. What need to be done, must be done now, don’t wait. Make a big problem got smaller and make a small problem disappeared. This is the attitude of execution. You can figure out a SHOULD then a CAN DO but they mean nothing unless you do it. How often you feel frustrated when you get an answer “No, I have not done it because I don’t have time, I do something else, I forget about it, I plan to do it tomorrow etc” Of course, you will get frustrated when someone just don’t do it. So you must do the opposite, GET IT DONE NOW.
4. Be a solution provider
Always have this in a back of your mind somewhere. This is what separates an exceptional performer from an ordinary one. You know what the problem is, so fix it, provide the solution or action plan how you are trying to resolve the issue. Do not be a problem escalator. You don’t want to just pass on the information about the problem, put some ideas in there. You can consult people/your boss for his/her opinion on something but you must have your own solution/direction or what you need to fix the problem first. Otherwise, you are just asking him/her to fix a problem for you. It’s your problem and your job to fix it, isn’t it? If NOT, why should you worry about it at the first place? Remember, everyone has a job because there is a problem for us to fix.
5. It’s all about Bottom Line
Sorry to say this but business is about bottom line. Do not think that activity is better than or equal to result. Everybody is working hard but what makes a different is what is delivered. This is the real world and it’s not fair so you are better off learning this now. Business needs results or bottom lines not activities.
6. Precise and Concise
Don’t waste my time… Oops, I don’t mean it in a bad way. But you must keep on practicing the precise and concise. Things that can be discussed in 5 minutes, try to make it in 3 minutes. Everything in this world is so complex. But if you can explain the most complex thing to make it crystal clear to someone in a short time, people will most likely love to listen to you. Why? They will understand it and they don’t have to spend much time. We are not only talking about conversation here but also email/presentation or other kinds of communications. Make it simple, don’t throw technical terms in there, stay focus on your topic. Like a wise old man teach me a long time ago, “KISS – Keep It Stupid and Simple”
7. Ask the question
You would rather be a stupid today and ask a question about what you don’t know than stay quiet and be a stupid forever. When you spend your time in a training or meeting, you shall ask the most stupid question about something that you don’t know. You must ask them all the questions you have, and slowly you will get involved and understand the training topics or meeting issues. Then you can contribute to the thinking/discussion/brain storming. I always do that, this is to expand my knowledge and the most important thing, I will not waste my time for free. The more you ask, the more you know. Plus, if you can’t contribute to or don’t want to understand the topics/issues, why should you spend your time there?
8. CALM
“Nothing gives a man so much advantages over the others as to remain calm and unruffled under all circumstances: Thomas E Jefferson.” Yes, he said it all in that quote.
