งานคอสเพลย์ครั้งแรกของประเทศไทย

สำหรับจุดเริ่มต้นของคอสเพลย์ในไทยนั้น ต้องแบ่งเป็น 2 แบบนั่นคือ งานแรกที่มีลักษณะของคอสเพลย์ในงาน กับงานแรกที่ใช้คำว่าคอสเพลย์

สำหรับงานแรกที่มีลักษณะคอสเพลย์ในไทยนั้น เท่าที่ระบุได้เก่าที่สุด คือ งาน “งานมหกรรมช่อง 9 การ์ตูน ส่งท้ายปี 2525 รับปีใหม่ปี 2526” ณ บริเวณลานจอดรถของสถานีโทรทัศน์สีช่อง 9 ซึ่งมีการเปิดประกวดแต่งกายตัวการ์ตูน โดยมีเด็กๆได้เข้าประกวดเป็นจำนวนมาก แต่ด้วยว่าสมัยนั้น ในประเทศไทยยังไม่ได้มีการนำคำว่า “คอสเพลย์” มาใช้ โดยใช้เพียงแค่ว่า “ประกวดการแต่งกาย”

สำหรับช่วงเริ่มต้นใช้คำว่าคอสเพลย์นั้น ในช่วงเริ่มต้น การคอสเพลย์ได้แบ่งเป็น 2 กลุ่มใหญ่ๆคือ “คอสเพลย์การ์ตูน” และ “คอสเพลย์ J-Rock”

งานแรกของคอสเพลย์การ์ตูนนั้นคืองาน ACHO Meeting ครั้งที่ 3 วันที่15 มีนาคม พศ. 2541 โดยกลุ่ม ACHO ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มการ์ตูนกลุ่มแรกๆของสังคมการ์ตูน แต่สำหรับทาง J-Rock นั้นยังไม่สามารถระบุได้ชัดเจนว่าเป็นงานไหน แต่ด้วยกระแส Cosplay J-Rock นั้น ก็จะต้องมาจากทางดนตรี J-Rock เช่นวง X-Japan, Luna Sea, Dir en grey ฯลฯ ดังนั้นจึงเชื่อว่าคอสเพลย์ J-Rock จึงเริ่มมาจากงานพบปะผู้ที่ชื่นชอบใน J-Rock เหมือนกัน หรือ งานที่มีลักษณะการแสดงวง Cover Band เพลง J-Rock นั่นเอง

การเติบโตของคอสเพลย์ในประเทศไทย

กระแสคอสเพลย์ในไทยเริ่มค่อยๆขยายในทีละกลุ่มมากขึ้น เช่น คอสเพลย์จากเกมนั้น ก็มีงานอย่างงานเกมออนไลน์ Ragnarok Online จัดการประกวดคอสเพลย์มาโดยตลอด คอสเพลย์จากการ์ตูน ก็มีงานอย่าง Vibulkij Comics Party, Cartoon & Animation ฯลฯ ในส่วนของทาง J-Rock นั้น ก็มีเหล่าคนผู้จัดจัดงานจำนวนมากขึ้น โดยควบคู่กับการแสดงสด Cover J-Rock

พ.ศ.2547-2548 [2004-2005] ถือเป็นช่วงปีที่คอสเพลย์เริ่มต้นขยายตัวออกไปในทางวงกว้างอย่างรวดเร็ว เริ่มมีผู้จัดหลากหลายมากยิ่ง รวมไปถึงงานที่คนคอสเพลย์ หรือคนในสังคมจัดกันเองที่เริ่มกลับมาอีกครั้ง เช่น งานการ์ตูนโดจินชิอย่าง Comic Market Thailand หรืองาน Only Event ต่างๆ ส่วนในทาง J-Rock นั้นก็นิยมจัดโดยไปเช่นสถานที่อย่างตามผับต่างๆ

ต้นปี พ.ศ. 2549 [2006] ได้มีงาน Manga Mania ซึ่งจัดโดยทางบริษัทค่ายเพลง RS Promotion ซึ่งนับจากจุดนั้น งานคอสเพลย์ก็เริ่มขยายตัวด้วยความรวดเร็ว และกว้างขวาง และยังเป็นปีแรกที่มีการจัดการประกวด World Cosplay Summit เป็น ครั้งแรกเพื่อคัดเลือกคอสเพลย์ไทย ไปแข่งขันระดับนานาชาติที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่นและยังเป็นปีแรกที่รูปแบบงานที่แบ่ง คอสเพลย์การ์ตูน และ คอสเพลย์ J-Rock เริ่มหายไป โดยงานที่เป็นรูปธรรมมากที่สุด ก็คืองาน J-Trends in Town ซึ่งมีทั้งคอสเพลย์สไตล์การ์ตูน และ J-Rock มาร่วมงานด้วยกันอย่างชัดเจน

พ.ศ.2550 [2007] นั้นก็ถือเป็นอีกปีที่มีจำนวนงานมากกว่า 50 งานภายในปีเดียว โดยก็มีผู้จัดมากเจ้าขึ้น เช่น Oishi, Hot Wave เป็นต้น เริ่มมีการใช้คำว่า คอสเพลย์ ทั่วไปมากยิ่งขึ้น จึงนับว่าเป็นอีกหนึ่งปีที่คอสเพลย์ขยายออกสู่สังคมภายนอกได้มากขึ้นในระดับหนึ่ง
