David Andrew Gemmell, August 1st 1948 - July 28th 2006.

Fantasy novelist David Gemmell, best known for stories such as Legend and Waylander, has died at the age of 57.


There were times in my life that I read to live. I wasn't reading for a living but reading for surviving a day. I read everything from Judy Blume to Stephen King, Mad Magazine to Vogue. Then, I found David Gemmell’s Legend. Couple of years later, when I grew out of the reading habit to others, there were only a few writers that I’ve been continue reading. Gemmell is one of them.

His story always simple, one or a group of simple persons got in to a death end situation. There were almost no chance of winning or surviving. But, with courage and hope, wisdom and love, some gave their lives for what they believed, some managed to win and the evil gone…..for a period of times. While I got carried away by exciting advanture plots, humor and sarcasm enlighten the story. His main characters in the novel are sharing the same qualities, quiet, smart, brave, deathly with scars in their lives. The supporting characters are more interesting, blunt, unpatience, came with luck, also very funny in a sarcasm way and never care if he would live or die. I always end up give my heart to these supporting dudes, and mostly they end up death, oh well.

I don’t really follow his personal life story. But so far I knew part of his main characters and supporting characters are his own personality. For example, he’s a drop out, no, lemme say it again, he got kick out from school. But he became a journalist and then a full time writer. A very successful fantasy writer, indeed.

Two weeks after successful heart operation, Gemmell found death at his working table at dawn. His wife believes he had been working all night with a full ashtray. His last novel was FALL OF KINGS. The last episode of Troy. Stella Gemmell, his wife, finished it after his outline.
