RAPID TRANSIT: The turnover rate of No. 1 songs on The Billboard Hot 100 continues at an accelerated pace, the fastest in eight years. After just one week at the summit, James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" (Custard/Atlantic) yields to Ne-Yo's "So Sick" (Def Jam). "So Sick" is the fifth song to achieve pole position in 2006. By comparison, last year's fifth chart-topper was "Inside Your Heaven" by Carrie Underwood. The date on the chart? July 2, 2005.

• In 2004, the fifth No. 1 of the year was by another "American Idol" winner, Fantasia. Her "I Believe" debuted on top the week of July 10.

• The fifth No. 1 of 2003 showed up a little sooner; 50 Cent's "21 Questions" led the list the week of May 31.

• The fifth No. 1 of 2002 arrived very late: Nelly and Kelly Rowland's "Dilemma" garnered top ink the week of Aug. 17.

• The fifth No. 1 of 2001 arrived only a little later than Ne-Yo's single. "Angel" by Shaggy featuring Rayvon was on top by March 31.

• Back in 2000, the fifth No. 1 of the year arrived on the same date as "So Sick." Destiny's Child reached the zenith the week of March 18 with "Say My Name."

• To find a year where the fifth No. 1 arrived earlier than "So Sick" and "Say My Name," you'd have to go back to 1998, when Will Smith's "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It" became the chart champ the week of March 14.

Fueled by digital sales, "So Sick" moves into the penthouse after an apparent peak at No. 6 and a decline to No. 7, No. 8 and last week, No. 9. The 9-1 move is the biggest jump to No. 1 since Sept. 17, 2005, when "Gold Digger" (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam) by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx surged 19-1.

"So Sick" is the seventh single of the rock era to make a 9-1 move, and the first in 33 years. The first six songs to rocket 9-1 are:

"All Shook Up," Elvis Presley (April 13, 1957)
"It's My Party," Lesley Gore (June 1, 1963)
"My Love," Petula Clark (Feb. 5, 1966)
"Hello, I Love You," the Doors (Aug. 3, 1968)
"Black and White," Three Dog Night (Sept. 16, 1972)
"The Morning After," Maureen McGovern (Aug. 4, 1973)

While this is Ne-Yo's first No. 1 as an artist, he does have a prior credit in that position. The Arkansas native, born Shaffer C. Smith, wrote the lyrics for Mario's "Let Me Love You," which was on top during January and February of 2005.

Ne-Yo is also No. 1 this week on The Billboard 200, where his CD "In My Own Words" enters at the top.

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY: There's no change at the top on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, which means Mary J. Blige rules for the 11th week with "Be Without You" (Geffen).

Since the R&B chart was re-introduced in 1965 after a brief hiatus, only six songs have been No. 1 for 11 weeks or more. This elite list includes:

14 weeks: "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here," Deborah Cox (1998)
14 weeks: "We Belong Together," Mariah Carey (2005)
12 weeks: "Bump N' Grind," R. Kelly (1994)
11 weeks: "I Will Always Love You," Whitney Houston (1992)
11 weeks: "You Make Me Wanna...," Usher (1997)
11 weeks: "Be Without You," Mary J. Blige (2006)

WHO'S 'SORRY' NOW: For only the second time in history, one artist is No. 1 on all four of Billboard's dance charts. Madonna's "Sorry" (Warner Bros.) is the leader on the Club Play, Dance Singles Sales and Dance Radio Airplay surveys while the parent CD "Confessions on a Dance Floor" rules the Top Electronic Albums list.

The only other time this happened was the week of Dec. 3, 2005, when "Hung Up" by Madonna was in charge on the three dance singles charts and "Confessions" was No. 1 on the Electronic tally.

IT'S A 'BEAUTIFUL' DAY: He's been No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs, Adult Top 40 and the Pop 100 charts, but this week James Blunt takes the big prize as his debut single, "You're Beautiful" (Custard/Atlantic), advances to No. 1 on the Hot 100. It's the first song by a U.K. artist to top this chart in eight years and two months, since Elton John had a 14-week reign with "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight."

Blunt is one of only four solo male artists to achieve pole position on the Hot 100 since that Elton John hit without also appearing on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs tally. The other three are Ricky Martin ("Livin' La Vida Loca" in 1999), Enrique Iglesias ("Bailamos" in 1999 and "Be With You" in 2000) and Clay Aiken ("This Is the Night" in 2003).

"You're Beautiful" is the fourth song to move to No. 1 in 2006. "Check On It" by Beyoncé featuring Slim Thug has the longest run at the top this year, with five weeks at No. 1. "Grillz" by Nelly featuring Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp had a two-week visit at the summit and "Laffy Taffy" by D4L stayed in the penthouse for one week.

'SORRY' SEEMS TO BE THE BIGGEST SELLER: While a British artist rules the American chart, an American sits on the throne in the United Kingdom. Madonna collects the 12th British No. 1 of her career with "Sorry," the follow-up to the No. 1 single "Hung Up."

With one dozen chart-toppers under her belt, Madonna remains the female artist with the most No. 1s in the United Kingdom. Kylie Minogue is in second place among solo female artists, with seven. The Spice Girls have nine.

Madonna is now tied with Cliff Richard's backing band, the Shadows, for fifth place among artists with the most No. 1s in the United Kingdom. The top four are: Elvis Presley (21), the Beatles (17), Cliff Richard (14) and Westlife (13).

THE MONKEY TIME: Jack Johnson's fourth chart entry on The Billboard 200 is his first to reach pole position. Entering the chart at No. 1 is "Curious George: Sing-a-Longs and Lullabies for the Film" (Brushfire). Johnson made his album tally debut exactly four years ago this week with "Brushfire Fairytales," which worked its way up to No. 34.

Starting with his sophomore release "On and On," each of his subsequent albums have charted in adjacent positions, in order. "On and On" peaked at No. 3 in May 2003 and "In Between Dreams" sailed to No. 2 in March 2005.

"Curious George" is the first soundtrack to top the chart since "Bad Boys II" in August 2003. The gap of two-and-a-half years between "Bad Boys II" and "Curious George" is the longest break between chart-topping soundtracks since the three years and eight months that elapsed between "Armageddon" in July 1998 and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" in March 2002.

"Curious George" is the first soundtrack to an animated film to top The Billboard 200 since "Pocahontas" reigned for one week in July 1995.

AS 'STUPID' DOES: Pink has the highest-debuting single of 2006 on the Billboard Hot 100, as "Stupid Girls" (Laface) crashes onto the chart at No. 24. That beats the No. 28 bow of "Start of Something New" (Walt Disney) by Zac Efron, Andrew Seeley & Vanessa Anne Hudgens just two weeks ago.

In its first week, "Stupid Girls" is already Pink's highest chart entry since she went to No. 20 with "Family Portrait" in January 2003. This new single marks Pink's first appearance on the chart since "Trouble" stopped at No. 68 in October 2003. That's the longest break between Pink chart entries since she debuted on the chart in March 2000 with "There You Go." That debut single entered the chart at No. 25 and was Pink's highest new entry until this week.

GOOD WEEK, 'BAD DAY':Continued weekly play on "American Idol" continues to fuel digital sales for Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" (Warner Bros.). The single rockets 9-2 on Hot Digital Songs and leaps 14-5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

A performance on "American Idol" also boosts the chart fortunes of fourth season runner-up Bo Bice. His second single, "The Real Thing" (RCA), is new at No. 98. Bice peaked at No. 2 in July 2005 with his debut single, "Inside Your Heaven."

'TEMPERATURE' RISING: The very rapid turnover of No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 continues, as Ne-Yo's "So Sick" (Def Jam) yields to Sean Paul's "Temperature" (VP/Atlantic). With "So Sick" falling after two weeks on top, "Temperature" becomes the sixth No. 1 of the year. This is the earliest the sixth No. 1 of a calendar year has shown up since 1991, when Mariah Carey's "Someday" became the sixth No. 1 the week of March 9.

With Paul following Ne-Yo, who succeeded James Blunt, this is the first time three solo male artists have ruled the Hot 100 consecutively since October 1990, when Maxi Priest's "Close to You," George Michael's "Praying for Time" and James Ingram's "I Don't Have the Heart" were adjacent chart-toppers.

The luck of the solo male artist may extend to Daniel Powter, who is having a good week with "Bad Day" (Warner Bros.). That single is up 5-2 and is in striking distance of pole position. If it does go all the way, it would be the first time four solo males have held the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 consecutively since 1988, when George Michael's "Father Figure," Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up," Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" and Billy Ocean's "Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car" were successive No. 1 singles.

"Temperature" is the third chart-topper for Paul. He first reached No. 1 in May 2003 with "Get Busy." Five months later he was on top again, paired with Beyoncé on "Baby Boy."

NO TURNOVER AT ALL: Unlike the Hot 100, where the turnover of No. 1 songs has been lightning-quick, there has been literally no turnover at all on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. On the first chart of the year, Mary J. Blige advanced to No. 1 with "Be Without You" (Geffen) and she remains there, 13 weeks later, the only song to rule this list in 2006.

When the next No. 1 of the year finally does show up, it could be the latest the second No. 1 song of a calendar year has shown up since 1947. After a 17-week non-consecutive reign, "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five finally gave way to their own "Texas and Pacific" the week of April 26, 1947.

At the 13-week mark, Blige's "Be Without You" is the second longest-running No. 1 since the R&B chart was reintroduced in 1965. The only songs to have longer reigns are "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here" by Deborah Cox in 1998 and Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" in 2005. Both remained on top for 14 weeks.

'WALK' THE WALK: An 11-8 move for "Walk Away" (RCA) on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart makes Kelly Clarkson the first artist in the 10-year history of this tally to score five top 10 hits from one album.

Clarkson's record-setting run began with "Breakaway," the title song from her second album. Featured in the movie "The Princess Diaries 2," "Breakaway" peaked at No. 2 in February 2005. Then, "Since U Been Gone" also peaked at No. 2, in May 2005. The third single, "Behind These Hazel Eyes," spent five weeks at No. 1, starting in August 2005. "Because of You" was next, and it peaked at No. 2 in December 2005.

PARTY LIKE IT’S 3121: If you add 31 + 2 + 1, the total is 34 and coincidentally, Prince spends his 34th week on top of The Billboard 200 with “3121” (Universal Republic), his first chart-topping set in almost 17 years.

The first Prince album to achieve pole position was the soundtrack to “Purple Rain” in 1984. That LP was No. 1 for 24 weeks. A year later, “Around the World in a Day” was No. 1 for three weeks. In the summer of 1989, the soundtrack to “Batman” reigned for six weeks.

It’s been two years since a Prince album debuted on The Billboard 200. “Musicology” entered and peaked at No. 3 the week of May 8, 2004. With “3121” bowing at No. 1, this is the first time Prince has had two consecutive top three titles in the last 20 years. The follow-up to the No. 1 album “Around the World in a Day” was “Parade,” which peaked at No. 3 the week of May 3, 1986.

Prince now has seven top three albums to his credit – his four No. 1 sets plus “Parade,” “Musicology” and one other album that peaked at No. 3, “Diamonds and Pearls,” from 1991.

SEVEN BAD DAYS EQUALS ONE GREAT WEEK: Seven years ago this week, Cher’s “Believe” slipped from the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 after a four-week visit. That was the last time a song on the Warner Bros. label topped the chart until this week. Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” is the 37th single on the Burbank-based imprint to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100.

When the Warner Bros. label was created, one of the first acts signed was the Everly Brothers. Don and Phil’s first WB single, “Cathy’s Clown,” was the label’s first No. 1 hit. The song ruled the Hot 100 for five weeks, beginning with the chart dated May 23, 1960.

Powter is the first solo male artist to have a No. 1 on Warner Bros. since James Ingram spent a week at the summit in October 1990 with “I Don’t Have the Heart.” Powter does give the label one first – he is the first Canadian artist to have a No. 1 on Warner Bros. The company has had international chart-toppers before, mainly from the United Kingdom (Petula Clark, Rod Stewart, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Fleetwood Mac and Dire Straits) and also Norway (a-ha).

Powter is the first Canadian act to occupy the penthouse since Nickelback led the list for four weeks in December 2001-January 2002 with “How You Remind Me.” "Chart Beat" reader Larry Cohen of Trumbull, Conn., notes that Powter is the 18th Canadian-born act to have a No. 1 in the rock era. The other 17 are: Paul Anka, Percy Faith, Lorne Greene, the Guess Who, Neil Young, Terry Jacks, Gordon Lightfoot, Andy Kim, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, Sheriff, Alannah Myles, Snow, Celine Dion, Barenaked Ladies and the aforementioned Nickelback. Honorable mention goes to Nick Gilder, born in England and raised in Canada from the age of 10.

“Bad Day” is the seventh song to advance to No. 1 in 2006. That continues the rapid turnover of No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 reported last week. By comparison, the seventh No. 1 of last year arrived the week of Nov. 26, 2005. This is the earliest the seventh No.1 of the year has arrived since 1991, when Timmy T’s “One More Try” became the seventh chart-topper of the year the week of March 23.

Since Powter replaces Sean Paul at No. 1 and Paul’s immediate predecessors were Ne-Yo and James Blunt, there have now been four solo male artists in a row in pole position. That hasn’t happened since 1988, when George Michael’s “Father Figure,” Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror” and Billy Ocean’s “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car” were consecutive No. 1 singles. Ocean’s hit moved into the top spot 18 years ago this week.

With one week at No. 1 under its belt, “Bad Day” is the ninth song in a row to spend five weeks or less at the apex. The last single to spend more than five weeks at No. 1 was “Gold Digger” by Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx. They had a 10-week reign from September-November 2005.

The current run of nine consecutive No. 1 songs to spend five weeks or less at the top is the longest since 2000. From June 17 to Nov. 11 of that year, there were 10 songs in a row that spent four weeks or less at No. 1.

While “Bad Day” isn’t by an “American Idol” finalist, Powter does owe the show a thank you. His international hit had been languishing in the United States until the Fox TV series started playing “Bad Day” every week, as underscore music to the video of the departing contestants on results shows.

FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day” is also the new No. 1 song on Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart, where it replaces James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” (Custard/Atlantic).

It is the first time in the history of this chart that solo male artists have had back-to-back No. 1 hits.

COX, CAREY AND BLIGE: Mary J. Blige holds off all challengers on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as her “Be Without You” (Geffen) retains pole position for the 14th week.

That mans “Be Without You” is tied with “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here” by Deborah Cox and “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey as the longest-running No. 1 songs since this chart was reactivated in 1965 after a brief hiatus.

If Blige is still on top next week, she will hit the 15-week mark and will have first place all to herself.

MUCH O'BLIGE: A 5-2 surge for T.I.'s "What You Know" (Grand Hustle/Atlantic) on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart isn't strong enough to depose Mary J. Blige, who rules the chart for a 15th week with the biggest hit of her career, "Be Without You" (Geffen). That means Blige has the longest-running No. 1 song on this chart since it was reintroduced in 1965 after a brief hiatus.

In the last 41 years, two songs had 14-week reigns, and were the longevity champs until "Be Without You" came along. "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here," a 1998 hit for Deborah Cox, and "We Belong Together," a 2005 hit for Mariah Carey, fall to second place on the list of the longest-running chart-toppers in modern times.

To find a No. 1 song that ruled as long as Blige's hit, one would have to go back to 1949, when the Charles Brown Trio was on top for 15 weeks with "Trouble Blues."Between 1945-1947, three other songs were No. 1 for 16 weeks or more. They were:

18 weeks "The Honeydripper (Parts 1 and 2)," Joe Liggins and His Honeydrippers
18 weeks "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five
17 weeks "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," Louis Jordan & His Tympany Five
16 weeks "Hey! Ba-Ba-Re-Bop," Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra

"Be Without You" is the sixth Blige recording to reach No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop tally. The first five:

"You Remind Me," one week (1992)
"Real Love," two weeks (1992)
"I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By," three weeks (1995) [Method Man featuring Mary J. Blige]
"Not Gon' Cry," five weeks (1996)
"Family Affair," two weeks (2001)

THE MORE 'YOU KNOW': T.I.'s "What You Know" becomes the rapper's biggest hit as a featured artist on the Billboard Hot 100 and his biggest hit period on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this week.

On the Hot 100, "What You Know" rockets 39-4, besting the No. 9 peak of T.I.'s 2005 hit, "Bring Em Out." T.I. has only charted higher on the Hot 100 as a featured artist on the Destiny's Child single "Soldier," which peaked at No. 3 one week after "Bring Em Out" checked in at No. 9.

On the R&B/Hip-Hop tally, "What You Know" beats the No. 3 peak of "Soldier" as well as the No. 6 peaks of "Bring Em Out" and an April 2005 hit, "U Don't Know Me."

If T.I.'s momentum on the Hot 100 continues and he replaces Daniel Powter at No. 1, it will be the first time five solo male artists have had consecutive No. 1 songs since 1977, when there were six solo male artists in a row in pole position: Marvin Gaye, Bill Conti, Alan O'Day, Shaun Cassidy, Barry Manilow and Andy Gibb.

HEAVEN 17 MUST HAVE SENT YOU: It was exactly 25 years ago this week that electronic-pop-dance trio Heaven 17 made its debut on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart, with the controversial single "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thing." Just in time to celebrate their silver anniversary, the three original members of Heaven 17 return to the Club Play list this week, debuting at No. 42 with "Hands Up to Heaven" (Ninthwave), from the new album "Before After."

Heaven 17, composed of Glenn Gregory, Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware, had a healthy run on the Club Play chart, with nine entries between 1981 and 1987. Then the band, a spin-off of the British Electric Foundation, which was spun off from the Human League, didn't chart again until 1993, when a remix of "Penthouse and Pavement" went to No. 26. "Hands Up to Heaven" is the trio's first appearance on the Club Play tally since the "Penthouse" remix charted 13 years ago.

Heaven 17's highest-ranked title to date is "Let Me Go," No. 4 in 1983, followed by "Contenders," No. 6 in 1987.

'HURTS' SO GOOD: Rascal Flatts' lucky number must be 13, because the group's 13th chart entry on the Billboard Hot 100 is its biggest hit to date, catapulting the band into the top 10 for the first time.

"What Hurts the Most" (Lyric Street) is Rascal Flatts' first song to appear in the top 20 of the Hot 100. The group's previous best was the No. 21 peak of "Mayberry" in May 2004. "Hurts" takes a huge 52-8 leap this week, thanks to a delayed release as a digital download after weeks of airplay.

"Hurts" is the seventh song to bound into the top 10 from the bottom half of the chart since Jan. 1, 2000. The 44-point surge is the biggest jump into the top 10 since February, when the "High School Musical" track "Breaking Free" by Zac Efron, Andrew Seeley and Vanessa Anne Hudgens set the all-time record by rocketing 86-4.

The seven songs to soar into the top 10 from the lower 50 positions since Jan. 1, 2000, are, in order of biggest jump:

86-4 "Breaking Free," Zac Efron, Andrew Seeley and Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Feb. 11, 2006) +82
60-2 "Loverboy," Mariah Carey featuring Cameo (Aug. 4, 2001) +58
55-2 "Incomplete," Sisqó (Aug. 5, 2000) +53
52-1 "A Moment Like This," Kelly Clarkson (Oct. 5, 2002) +51
54-7 "Auld Lang Syne," Kenny G (Jan. 8, 2000) +47
52-8 "What Hurts the Most," Rascal Flatts (April 22, 2006) +44
53-10 "Stranger in My House," Tamia (April 14, 2001) +43

"Hurts" is the ninth song by a country act to appear in the top 10 of the Hot 100 since Jan. 1, 2000, but the first since digital downloads were added in to the mix and country airplay was deleted. Eight of the nine tracks charted on Hot Country Songs; the odd men out are Nelly and Tim McGraw. Their collaboration on "Over and Over" was not a country hit.

While Carrie Underwood's "Inside Your Heaven" peaked at No. 52 on Hot Country Songs, it was considered a pop song, as opposed to her other country releases. At the time, Underwood had not established her country credentials, which she quickly collected when "Jesus, Take the Wheel" ruled Hot Country Songs for six weeks and her album "Some Hearts" was certified double-platinum.

The nine songs by country acts to break into the top 10 of the Hot 100 since Jan. 1, 2000, are, in order of peak position:

"Amazed," Lonestar (No. 1, 2000)
"Inside Your Heaven," Carrie Underwood (No. 1, 2005)
"Breathe," Faith Hill (No. 2, 2000)
"Over and Over," Nelly featuring Tim McGraw (No. 3, 2004)
"The Way You Love Me," Faith Hill (No. 6, 2001)
"Long Time Gone," Dixie Chicks (No. 7, 2002)
"Landslide," Dixie Chicks (No. 7, 2003)
"What Hurts the Most," Rascal Flatts (No. 8, 2006)
"There You'll Be," Faith Hill (No. 10, 2001)

CHART BEAT
The latest news in the world of Billboard's definitive sales and airplay charts.

Fred Bronson

MARIAH AND ELVIS REDUX: Mariah Carey didn't break an Elvis Presley record this week, but she did tie one.

Just seven days after surpassing Presley's total of No. 1 pop singles in the rock era, Carey equals the King's number of weeks in pole position. A second week in the penthouse for "Touch My Body" (Island) gives Carey an aggregate total of 79 weeks spent on top. Presley spent his 79th week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 dated Nov. 1, 1969, when "Suspicious Minds" held sway for seven days.

While some sources report that Presley has occupied the No. 1 spot for 80 weeks, the official Billboard tally is 79. The discrepancy arises when counting more than one chart in the days before the Hot 100, when Billboard published multiple singles charts each week. "All Shook Up" was No. 1 for eight weeks on Best Sellers in Stores, considered the official singles chart in those pre-Hot 100 days. On the chart titled "Most Played in Juke Boxes," "All Shook Up" had a nine-week reign, and that's why other sources cite the 80-week figure.

If "Touch My Body" is still in first place next week, I'll be reporting that Carey has broken another Presley record as she collects her 80th week at No. 1. Carey will be busy that day guest-starring on "American Idol," but should she break Presley's record, hopefully there will be a moment in the production schedule to celebrate.

Here are Carey's 18 No. 1 songs, and how long each one held on to the lead position:

"Vision of Love," four weeks (1990)
"Love Takes Time," three weeks (1990)
"Someday," two weeks (1991)
"I Don't Wanna Cry," two weeks (1991)
