กรุงลอนดอน เป็นสถานที่จัดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก ครั้งนี้เป็นครั้งที่ 3 .. การเรียกคำย่อ แบบไม่เป็นทางการของการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกครั้งนี้ เรียกว่า ‘London 2012’ แทนที่จะใช้ London Games อย่าง Beijing Games เมื่อครั้งที่แล้ว .. The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, also known informally as London 2012 .. Beijing จัดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก เมื่อครั้งที่แล้วเป็นครั้งแรก จึงสามารถเรียก Beijing Games ได้ แต่กรุงลอนดอนจัดมาแล้ว 3 ครั้ง .. อนึ่ง กรุงโซล ประเทศเกาหลีใต้ ก็จัดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก เป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี 1988 .. และ กรุงโตเกียว ประเทศญี่ปุ่น ก็จัดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก เป็นครั้งแรก เมื่อปี 1964 (ทวีปเอเชียเคยจัดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกมาแล้ว 3 ครั้งเท่านั้น)
การแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก 2012 ที่กรุงลอนดอน ประเทศอังกฤษ ได้ฤกษ์เปิดฉากอย่างเป็นทางการขึ้นแล้ว เมื่อคืนวันศุกร์ที่ 27 กรกฎาคม 2555 เวลา 21.00 น. เวลากรุงลอนดอน มี แดนนี่ บอยล์ Danny Boyle ผู้กำกับการแสดงภาพยนตร์ชาวอังกฤษ เจ้าของราวัลออสการ์ จากภาพยนตร์เรื่อง ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ และจากภาพยนตร์ชื่อดัง ‘Trainspotting’ เป็นผู้ได้รับเกียรติวางแผนและกำกับการแสดงของพิธีเปิดทั้งหมด
ลอนดอน 2012 เป็นการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิกครั้งที่ 30 the Games of the XXX Olympiad มีประเทศเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 204 ประเทศ มีจำนวนนักกีฬาเข้าร่วมแข่งขันประมาณ 10,490 คน เข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 302 ชนิดกีฬา ของจำนวนกีฬา 26 ประเภท ระหว่างวันที่ 27 กรกฎาคม 2012 ถึงวันที่ 12 สิงหาคม 2012 .. หากเปรียบเทียบกับ ปักกิ่งเกมส์ ครั้งที่ 29 the Games of the XXIX Olympiad มีประเทศเข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 204 ประเทศ (เท่ากัน) มีจำนวนนักกีฬาที่เข้าร่วมแข่งขันจำนวน 11,028 คน (มากกว่า) เข้าร่วมแข่งขัน 302 ชนิดกีฬา ของจำนวนกีฬา 28 ประเภท ระหว่างวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม 2008 (8 / 8 / 08) ถึงวันที่ 24 สิงหาคม 2008
ก่อนจะถึงพิธีเปิดการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก ประเทศอังกฤษดูแลรักษาความปลอดภัยอย่างเข้มงวดทั่วกรุงลอนดอน มีการใช้เฮลิคอปเตอร์บินสำรวจทั่วกรุงลอนดอนก่อนพิธีเปิดจะเริ่มต้น 24 ชั่วโมง ขณะที่มีเจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจ ทหาร ตรวจตราตรวจสอบอาวุธและให้ความสำคัญต่อการรักษาความปลอดภัย ตามสถานีรถไฟฟ้า ในแหล่งชุมชน รวมไปถึงบริเวณเส้นทางเข้าออกโอลิมปิกพาร์ค ซึ่งเป็นจุดเชื่อมต่อสำคัญไปยังหมู่บ้านนักกีฬา สนามการแข่งขัน รวมไปถึงศูนย์สื่อมวลชน

การแสดงชุดแรก มีชื่อว่า Countdown ใช้เวลาสามนาทียี่สิบหกวินาที ใช้ผู้แสดงประมาณ 180 คน เล่าเรื่องจุดเริ่มต้นของแม่น้ำเธมส์ แม่น้ำสายสำคัญของกรุงลอนดอน อันมีต้นกำเนิดที่ กลอสเตอร์เชียร์ จากนั้นแม่น้ำเล็กสายนี้ ไหลลงมาสู่ คอตส์วูลด์ ฮิลล์ ก่อนจะกลายเป็นแม่น้ำเธมส์ หัวใจสำคัญของผู้ที่อยู่อาศัยในกรุงลอนดอน

อนึ่ง แบรดลีย์ วิกกินส์ Bradley Wiggins เป็นนักปั่นจักรยาน เจ้าของแชมป์ ตูร์ เดอ ฟรองซ์ 2012 ในปีปัจจุบัน วัย 32 ปี สูง 1.90 m น้ำหนัก 69 kg .. He won the 2012 Tour de France, becoming the first British winner in its 99 year history. .. He has won six cycling World Championships, his first in 2003 and his most recent in 2008. .. Wiggins won a bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics and three additional medals at the 2004 Summer Olympics, and two golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics. .. Wiggins' three gold, one silver and two bronze Olympic medals make him the sixth most successful British Olympian, and his total of six medals makes him the most bemedalled British Olympian alongside Steve Redgrave.

ช่วงที่ 4 เป็นการเข้าสู่ช่วงเวลาสำคัญ ให้ชื่อว่า Happy & Glorious ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลาที่สมเด็จพระราชินีอลิซาเบธที่สอง เสด็จเข้ามาในสนาม โดยมี ฌาคส์ โรกก์ ประธานคณะกรรมการโอลิมปิกสากล และผู้มีเกียรติที่ได้รับเชิญจากประเทศต่างๆ ทั่วโลก ยืนขึ้นปรบมือต้อนรับ การแสดงชุดนี้จัดทำขึ้นเป็นภาพยนตร์สั้นก่อน โดยมี แดเนียล เคร็ก Daniel Craig นักแสดงภาพยนตร์ชาวอังกฤษชื่อดัง เจ้าของบทบาท เจมส์ บอนด์ 007 สายลับชื่อดังของเกาะอังกฤษ ร่วมแสดงภาพยนตร์สั้น .. เนื้อเรื่องในภาพยนตร์สั้น แดเนียล เคร็ก ที่รับบทเป็น สายลับ 007 ไปรับพระราชินีเอลิซาเบธ ซึ่งทรงฉลองครองสิริราชสมบัติครบ 60 ปี ในปีนี้ ที่พระราชวังบัคกิ้งแฮม ก่อนพาพระองค์ขึ้นเฮลิคอปเตอร์ เดินทางไปถึงสนามโอลิมปิก สเตเดี้ยม

ชาติแรกที่เดินนำเข้าสู่สนาม คือ กรีซ ได้รับเกียรติเดินเข้ามาเป็นลำดับแรกในฐานะชาติที่ให้กำเนิดการแข่งขันโอลิมปิก จากนั้นก็เรียงลำดับก่อนหลังตามชื่อภาษาอังกฤษของชื่อประเทศ สำหรับคณะนักกีฬาไทยเดินพาเหรดเข้าสนามเป็นลำดับที่ 183 มี ณัฐพงษ์ เกษอินทร์ ชื่อเล่น เจมส์บอนด์ นักกีฬาว่ายน้ำเป็นผู้ถือธงไตรรงค์เข้าสู่สนาม .. และมีคณะนักกีฬาของสหราชอาณาจักรเดินเข้าสนามเป็นคณะสุดท้ายในฐานะเจ้าภาพ
อนึ่ง 1. ผู้ถือธงชาติแต่ละประเทศ จะเป็นนักกีฬาผู้มีชื่อเสียงของแต่ละประเทศ จะเป็นกีฬาประเภทใดก็ได้ บางประเทศคัดเลือกผู้ชาย บางประเทศคัดเลือกผู้หญิง 2. มีผู้เดินขนาบข้าง ผู้ถือธงชาติแต่ละชาติ ทางด้านซ้ายเป็นผู้ถือกระถางเพลิง ขนาดใหญ่ประมาณอุ้มสองมือ เพื่อจะนำไปใช้ในขั้นตอนต่อไป เป็นคบเพลิงจริงๆ รวม 204 คบเพลิง (204ชาติ) และทางเจ้าภาพจะส่งมอบกระถางเพลิงที่ใช้งานนี้ ให้เป็นที่ระลึกแก่ทุกชาติเมื่อพิธีปิดกีฬาโอลิมปิกเรียบร้อยแล้ว กับทางด้านขวาของผู้ถือธงชาติแต่ละชาติ เป็นผู้แบกโครงเหล็กที่มีชื่อประเทศเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ผู้แบกโครงเหล็กเป็นสุภาพสตรีสวยของประเทศอังกฤษ (ดูรูปภาพประกอบ รูปภาพที่ 45)

เสื้อผ้าชุดทางการ (ชุดโชว์) ของประเทศเจ้าภาพ เป็นสีขาวสลับทอง ดูเด่น ดูโก้มาก เป็นเสื้อผ้าที่เหมาะสมกับการเดินพาเหรดและเก็บไว้เป็นที่ระลึกเป็นความประทับใจของนักกีฬาจนถึงรุ่นลูกหลาน .. ทีนี้ หากใครได้เห็นยูนิฟอร์มทางการของนักกีฬาชายหญิงชาวไทย (ชุดโชว์) อาจจะรู้สึกว่า ไม่สวยเลย เพราะเป็นเสื้อสูทสีเทากลาง เสื้อเชิ้ตขาว เนคไทยสีอ่อนกว่าสีเทากลาง ดูไกลๆ จึงไม่เด่นสะดุดตา ยิ่งเมื่อไปยืนร่วมกับชุดทางการ ชุดโชว์ ของอีกประมาณ 200 ประเทศ จะดูซูบ ไม่ผ่อง ไร้สง่าราศี และหากนักกีฬาไทยต้องการเก็บไว้เป็นความทรงจำให้ลูกหลานได้เห็น รูปทรงและสีเทาแบบนี้ จะมีขายมีใช้กันอยู่ทั่วไปในชีวิตประจำวัน ทำให้ขาดความขลังของการเข้าไปมีส่วนร่วมในกีฬาที่ยิ่งใหญ่ระดับโลก 4 ปีมี 1 ครั้ง ... เฮ้อ จขบ.เห็นสูทในลักษณะแบบนี้ เห็นทุกปี ของนักกีฬาโอลิมปิกชายหญิงชาวไทย .. จขบ.คิดว่า ผู้มีอำนาจควรจะตัดสินใจใหม่บ้าง อย่ามองแต่โรงงานเดิม ที่เคยให้เขาออกแบบ และสั่งตัดเสื้อสูททุกปี ลองตัดสินใจ ให้ประชาชน นักศึกษา มีส่วนร่วมคิดออกแบบเสื้อสูททางการ ชุดโชว์ของนักกีฬาไทย ที่จะไปเดินโชว์ให้ผู้ชม 1 พันล้านคนทั่วโลกได้ชม เป็นการประชาสัมพันธ์ที่ไม่แพงเลย และเป็นเกียรติประวัติแก่นักกีฬาที่ครั้งหนึ่งได้ไปมีส่วนร่วมในมหกรรมกีฬาแห่งมนุษยชาติ จะได้เก็บเสื้อผ้าที่น่าหวงแหนนี้ไว้ให้ลูกหลานเห็น .. ขอ อุปมา นะ เสื้อผ้าที่นักศึกษาช่วยออกแบบประกวด ให้มิสไทยแลนด์ยูนิเวอร์ส จะ ดู เท่ ทุกปี .. นั่นแสดงว่า นักศึกษา หากได้มีส่วนร่วมในงานระดับชาติ คงจะช่วยคิดรูปแบบเสื้อผ้าทางการ ชุดโชว์ ที่มีสีสัน มีสง่าราศี ให้กับนักกีฬาไทยได้ดีกว่าให้ผู้มีอำนาจและให้ทางโรงงานออกแบบ

Last night the 2012 Summer Olympics kicked off with a huge Opening Ceremony in London's new Olympic Stadium, an event watched on television by an estimated 1 billion viewers. Performances paid tribute to British heritage and culture, from agrarian beginnings through pop culture successes like the Beatles and J.K. Rowling. Contingents from more than 200 nations marched in the athletes parade, and the evening was capped off by the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron, a performance by Paul McCartney, and a huge fireworks display. Collected below is just a glimpse of last night's ceremony, as the 2012 Olympics are now underway.

Almost all reviews were positive, but a British Conservative M.P., Aidan Burley, denounced the content of the ceremony on Twitter as "leftie multicultural crap. Bring back Red Arrows, Shakespeare and the Stones."
Foreign reaction was generally positive. The New York Times said "With its hilariously quirky Olympic opening ceremony, a wild jumble of the celebratory and the fanciful; the conventional and the eccentric; and the frankly off-the-wall, Britain presented itself to the world Friday night as something it has often struggled to express even to itself: a nation secure in its own post-empire identity, whatever that actually is." The Sydney Morning Herald said it was "an unforgettable start" and The Times of India said "London presented a vibrant picture of Great Britain's rich heritage and culture as a colourful opening ceremony marked the inauguration of the 30th Olympic Games."
