The writer of tvN’s new drama “The Devil Judge” has shared his thoughts on the starring cast!
“The Devil Judge” is a drama set in an alternate-universe, dystopian version of Korea where the entire nation participates in a trial through a live broadcast courtroom show. Ji Sung stars as Kang Yo Han, a head judge with mysterious intentions: is he a hero of the people in a world filled with chaos, or is he a devil who wears the mask of the law?
Former judge Moon Yoo Suk, who wrote the hit legal drama “Miss Hammurabi” and has since left the courtroom behind to focus on his writing, penned the script for “The Devil Judge.”
Describing his inspiration for the story, Moon Yoo Suk remarked, “I think this kind of society is the perfect stage for a devil judge to rise as a hero by putting on a flashy trial show amidst the anger and discontent of the public.”
“Sadly, from a certain point on,” he continued, “rather than a kind and just protagonist, people started preferring to have an extremely powerful person on their side, no matter what their motives are. That’s the fantasy that this new era demands.”
“Instead of that fantasy in and of itself, I thought it was more fun to imagine what kinds of things might happen if that fantasy actually became a reality,” he went on.
Varied Shade of Grey
What this drama really wants to say about justice. Is it that Ga On is right, and good and evil are black and white? Or is it that Yo Han is right, and there is no such thing as good and evil but varied shades of gray?
Yo Han never forgives and he never forgets (unless Ga On is involved) so it’s to be expected that he planned one final hurrah in case everything went to hell. And it’s the exact same plan as Ga On’s: to bring down the courtroom where he set the wheels in motion, killing himself and all the elite trapped within. Yo Han’s done too much, gone too far in his quest for justice and revenge. The charges and accusations against him have risen to fever pitch and Yo Han is exhausted. He has to disappear for all this to end; so he can finally have peace.
From Yo Han ogling shirtless Ga On and vice versa, to slow motion caresses during bomb defusing, this show has given us no shortage of romance between our two judges. It’s important to acknowledge this because representation matters (and the original script is out, where all the more explicitly queer scenes were cut). But this begs the question of how Soo Hyun fits in. If Ga On has romantic moments with both, then whom does he love?
The answer is simple. Soo Hyun is Ga On’s past love. Yo Han is Ga On’s present. From the moment Ga On met Yo Han, his interactions with Soo Hyun diminished. He was living in Yo Han’s mansion, cooking for him, and even Soo Hyun commented that Ga On’s been whisked away by some rich man.
Ga On’s heart was torn between his past love and present love and their different ideologies. He chose Yo Han, stayed with him, and disregarded Soo Hyun to the point where he asked for and promptly ignored her opinion regarding Doh Young Choon. But that gets shaken up when past and present collide at the scene of Cha Kyung Hee’s death. Ga On’s shaken up and feels guilty for choosing Yo Han, so he retreats to what’s familiar. He has years of history, friendship and love for Soo Hyun so he believes he’s still attracted to her. But it was a child’s love, soft and comfortable. Ga On remained in Soo Hyun’s safety net until she died, then he went even deeper because she died. Because he really did care for her.
But at the end of the day, this show tells us that Ga On loved Yo Han more. Because Ga On did not attempt to kill himself for Soo Hyun, but he was fully prepared to go kaboom (twice!) for Yo Han. Ga On showed up with a knife to avenge Soo Hyun. He showed up with a bomb for Yo Han. Sure, Ga On tells Min Jung Ho that his death will atone for Soo Hyun’s death, but he drops that in a second when he finds that Yo Han is alive. His consequent actions upon hearing that Yo Han plans to die cement that the bond between them was romantic in nature.
Ga On rushes over to the court, uncaring of his own safety. He doesn’t bother telling Yo Han not to kill the elite; his only concern is for Yo Han himself, and when the man can’t be talked out of it, Ga On says he’ll die by Yo Han’s side.
At its core, this was the story of a man steeped in darkness meeting a man bathed in light. They fought together, apart, and against each other, but still tried to die for each other.
In this show, characters are defined not by whether they made bad decisions, but by how soon they correct them. This was the case with Oh Jin Joo, and Ga On also immediately vows to right his wrongs. But he scarcely has the time to set his plan in motion before horrible news reaches him. Yo Han is dead.
In a fascinating pairing, the show parallels Ga On’s and Sun Ah’s reactions to the news. Sun Ah is visibly devastated in a manner we’ve never seen before. This is the woman who killed numerous people without batting an eyelash, who got blood on her dress and smiled sweetly — but she sinks to the floor in shock. In contrast, Ga On’s reaction is a masterclass in muted desolation: silent and numb.
But why does this show posit the reaction of these two people side by side? Why not Elijah? Why Ga On and Sun Ah? Because these were the two people who could never decide if they hated Yo Han or loved him, who couldn’t help returning to him over and over again even when they couldn’t see eye to eye. Yo Han’s enemies, his partners, and his soulmates.
Sun Ah is who Yo Han would have been without Isaac. A child in an adult’s body forever seeking to appease her past self, to give that broken child what she yearned for so badly: a beautiful, shiny life with the beautiful boy who truly saw her. Only Sun Ah discovered that all that is gold does not glitter. A shiny life carries a deep ugliness within. But that beautiful boy became an even more alluring man. So she coveted him, chased after him, tortured him, all while yearning for him to look at her.
Only Yo Han never saw her — but he couldn’t stop looking at Ga On from day one. For Ga On, this is the man he got wrong, then got right, whose broken home he was in the middle of fixing. The man he cooked for, whose word he valued above Soo Hyun’s, his partner at home and outside. The man he failed and will now avenge. Ga On vows to die for vengeance, and Sun Ah packs a gun in her purse, both with blood on their minds. So it’s only fitting that the show parallels their horror and grief. Because at the end of the day, they both loved Yo Han.
The meaning behind the last of the show’s posters is made clear. Because for all Yo Han’s cunning, Sun Ah was always a step ahead from the beginning. She used Ga On to blind Yo Han, so that he wouldn’t see her coming until it was too late. And she succeeded.
Kang Yo-han [Yo-Han - Johan - พระเจ้าผู้ทรงพระคุณ], a chief judge who punishes the dishonest with no mercy, thus earning himself a reputation as a hero of the people. However, he maintains a mysterious background and conceals his true motivations and ambitions.
Yo Han’s main defense mechanism: making people he loves hate him, because he’s so scared of letting someone in and getting screwed over. His defense mechanism is to paint himself as a monster: being feared gives him some control and power. Being a victim gives him nothing but pain.
He’s a man who makes his own law in a world where the law means nothing. He may seem calm and collected, but he’s just planning revenge. He identifies strongly with the idea of vigilante justice becausehe’s a victim and knows how impossible it is to make the elite pay.
Yo Han always seems like he knows what he’s doing, but the man’s a walking disaster mentally. He’s horribly traumatized, desperately needs an ally, and is all but begging Ga On for help. There’s his guilt from not saving Isaac, his unresolved trauma from childhood abuse, the weight of holding onto revenge for so long, and his shame at the unfair rulings he had to make to reach this point. The man is one step away from internal combustion.
Sun Ah and Yo Han are sides of the same coin, but while he exercises his power in the name of vengeance and punishment, she does so for glitz and more power. That difference in motivation makes one a villain and the other a (morally ambiguous) hero. The show posits Yo Han as devilish when he’s an avenging angel, while Sun Ah appears as sweet as honey but is cruel to the core.
What this show is trying to say about people like Yo Han. That people who fight for justice using morally gray means deserve hatred? That they’re “devils”?
Both Yo Han and Ga On buried their rage in order to survive, but while Yo Han channeled his into vengeance, Ga On warped it into naïveté bordering on the unfathomably ridiculous – a La La Land where everyone and everything will be rainbows and sunshine as long as one worships the sainted laws and systems.
Will Ga On and his easily-shaken trust be able to pick what’s morally gray but just over what’s legal but evil?
Ep.9-10 Ga On takes a while to switch loyalties, but when he does, he gives his heart without reservation. Gone are the arguments and the physical fights. Instead, Ga On starts to heal Yo Han’s fractured family by bringing them together to help them understand that Yo Han isn’t a monster.
He determinedly cooks a full course meal and insists that Yo Han come home to enjoy it, that they all sit at the table like a family. Yo Han’s reaction is priceless, going from confusion to a genuine smile. Dinner is an easy, happy affair, and for the first time, Yo Han visibly relaxes. These two are so good for each other!
Ga On’s efforts aren’t one-sided either. Yo Han’s always needed someone to lean on, and as Ga On continues to brighten his house, Yo Han finally drops his guard and lets himself be vulnerable in front of the other man. The proud, reserved judge who kept calling himself a monster actually cries in front of Gaon, and instead of suspicion, Ga On responds with concern.
Yo Han goes from a man who distrusts and dislikes people to someone who smiles more, is more playful around Ga On, and trusts him with everything. Their growing trust and Yo Han’s corresponding character growth is heartwarming. So, it’s no great surprise that when Ga On needs him, Yo Han steps up and stands by his side.
Soohyun might have stopped Ga On from vengeance the first time around, but that desire didn’t vanish. Ga On buried it deep, covering it with half-baked ideas about faith in the system, justice, and hope. But Yo Han awoke that desire again and unleashed a part of Ga On that surprised them both.
Yo Han’s a master at crafting the perfect punishment, and he pulls out all stops here with creating one that allows Ga On to keep his conscience clear and finally have justice. But most importantly, Yo Han gives Ga On the choice Soohyun took away, and Ga On makes the decision to walk away from revenge. Not because anyone is forcing him, but because he wants to.
Ga On returning the victims’ money with the sweetest smile on his face is cathartic, and it further demonstrates that this happy ending isn’t something the system would ever have permitted. But working outside the system with Yo Han allowed him to bring justice to so many people. It’s vigilante justice of the best sort and only brings our favorite duo closer together.
There’s so much to be appreciated about the fact that Sun Ah’s end doesn’t come via Yo Han or any other man. She is the source of her own undoing. -
Tellingly, Sun Ah doesn’t panic upon hearing that she’s going to die. She brought that gun to the meeting knowing she was going to kill Heo Joong Se. And she sure does, right in the middle of another one of his long, rambling speeches. The other elites plead for her to kill Yo Han so they can leave the courtroom and save themselves. But Sun Ah is tired of this game, and for all the hurt she gave him, she could never kill Yo Han. Still, she won’t let him decide how she goes out. And so for the last time, she calls him what she always has.
And a woman who could have owned the world leaves it. Yo Han wearily looks down at her body and silently exhales in pity.
What a magnificent, lovable, pitiable villain, who to the very end felt like a heartbroken child. Sun Ah, you will be missed.
