Solar Eclipse----When Day Becomes Night
According to an ancient Chinese legend dragon live in the sky,and from time to time,it would swallow the sun.People belived the legend because it explained something they did not understand----a solar eclipse.
Solar refers to the sun.As the moon orrits the earth,it sometime passes directly between the earth and the sun. The result is solar eclipse. During an eclipse,the moon blocks the sun's light causing a shadow to cover a sction of the earth's surface.A solar eclipes can be either total or partial.
During a total eclipes ,the sun's light is completely blocked by the moon. Only a halo of light is visible around the edge of the sun.The area of darkness caused by the moon's shadow is quite small;it may extend only 60 to 200 miles in width.A total eclipes may last about seven minutes.Total solar eclipses.Total solar eclipes are rare----only about 70 occur during century.
In a partial eclipes,the moon covers only a portion of the sun.Part of the sun is dark and of remains bright.The moon's shadow on the earth is larger,so a partialeclipse can be seen across a wider area than a total eclipse.A partial eclipse can last for an hour or loger.
Whether it is total or partial, a solar eclipse is one of nature's most spectacular events.
