เดิมชื่อ "วัดศรีบุญเรือง”เป็นวัดที่สร้างตามแบบศิลปะล้านนาประยุกต์ ตั้งเด่นบนเนินเตี้ยๆ เห็นได้แต่ไกลภายใต้เนินนั้นเป็นถ้ำศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ที่ชาวบ้านนับถือจึงเรียกกันว่า"วัดบ้านเด่น" เป็นวัดที่มีความวิจิตรงดงามตระการตาด้วยศิลปะสถาปัตยกรรมไทยล้านนาภายใต้แนวคิดที่ว่าให้เป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนทางจิตใจมากกว่าการประกอบพิธีกรรมทางศาสนา จึงเป็นธรรมกุศโลบาย ในการสร้างวัดให้งดงาม เพื่อดึงดูดผู้คนให้เข้าวัดชมความสวยงามที่แฝงไว้ด้วยคติธรรม เป็นการชักนำชาวโลกยุคนี้ให้ใกล้ชิดศาสนาและซึมซับในคำสอนขององค์พุทธศาสดา พร้อมๆไปกับการเที่ยวชมพุทธสถานแห่งนี้
