Thais have been urged to copy HM the King’s virtues to combat widespread corruption. The advice comes from Dr Sumeth Tantivejjakul, secretary-general of the Chai Pattana Foundation, who spoke yesterday at a seminar organised by National Institute of Development Administration. Sumeth, whose foundation is devoted to HM the King’s philanthropic work, said dishonesty and corruption were worse than cancer and Thais needed to join forces to remedy the situation.

When HM the King ascended the throne nearly six decades ago, it was pronounced that the Kingdom would be ruled by the 10 virtues, but Sumeth said only a few people today could remember all the ethical rules, let alone follow them.

“If everyone followed these rules, the land would be much more peaceful,” he said, adding that many Thai people had become obsessed with “getting rich”, which resulted in greater hardship.

In the wake of 1997 financial crisis, HM the King has repeatedly urged the government and the Thai people to turn to self-sufficient economic development so as to avoid more serious problems in the future.

“We’re often taught to try to get rich first, regardless of the negative consequences. We don’t care that such a mentality can backfire, leading to hardship for ourselves or other people.

“As for the King’s virtues, one of the first rules is to appreciate giving. This is not necessarily about giving away money or goods: you can give by many other means.

“Then there are the Lord Buddha’s five precepts, then honesty, the fundamental remedy for corruption in our society, then humility. The higher the public office one holds, the more humble one needs to be in order to gain the respect of the people.

“The next important rule is that one always needs to persevere. Then don’t get angry easily and listen to other people’s criticism,” he said.
