Teak as Food Production and World Teak Conference 2013

To day more than 50,000 ha of teak plantations are raised annually for which the large quantities of improved planting stocks are required. Tissure culture, an important branch of biotechnology , can be used to improve the productivity through enhanced multiplication of desired planting material. The possibily of plant production using meristem tissue from 100 year old teak. Plant biotechnology has emerged as a powerful tool to address the problem in tree improvement programmes . In vitro propagation is not only important for cloning for existing superior genotypes but also can play an important role in the propation of genetically improved trees where specificgenes for tolerance to abiotic and biotic stresses and higher growth rates have been introduced. Such trees shoud bring forestry in to a new era of productivity and quality teakwood for export and domestic demand. (Tzvi Tzfira , et al 1998 and Bedell, 1989 )
