Sunday, September 06, 2009 Late night victories play havoc with my bedtime
Hi everyone,
The first thing you might want to know is why didn't I post yesterday at the blog.
The reason is very simple: Schedule!!! I finished my match at midnight and it was a pretty long one. Not even close the longest I've played, but 3 hours in total.
You might think, OK midnight is not that much, but you know, after the match is over you have to do on-court TV interviews and then some people were waiting for me just before the locker room and I stopped to say hi. One of them was a famous actor in Spain that did a few very funny movies. He was there with other two people I didn't know who they were. I stopped and chatted for a little while.
I did press around 1 am and finished after 1.25 am. With the travel back to the hotel, the stretching, and dinner it was almost 3 am when I finally got to bed. As you can imagine it was too late to do the blog. Then this morning I went to the tournament at 11 so I really found myself with the day finishing almost before it started and didn't have the time.
Tomorrow I play during the day and already on Sunday, It's two weeks since I have been in NY and so far I am enjoying my stay. Let's hope I am still here tomorrow night!
Thanks all.
Rafa
Rafa replies: Lion King is up there with Mama Mia as my favourite
Did you watch the Wimbledon final this year or was too hard to see the tournament go ahead with you? Danny RN: Yes I did watch it. The whole match.
Did you you have any posters on your bedroom wall when you were younger ? And if so, who of? Kim RN: Not at all.
What musicals do you like to watch other than "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Mamma Mia"? Deisi RN: Lion King
I'm curious what it is that Maymo records during your practice and what you do with the information? Holly RN: I have to ask him, really. He writes EVERYTHING
I've seen you write on your hands before a big match. For instance, you had several words written in black ink on your hand in the Indian Wells final this year, which you won! Can you tell us what you wrote? GiocondaVB RN: I just had some words to remind me to stay active and focussed.
I saw that you went shopping on 5th Ave on your off day. I remember that paparazzi followed you in London in 2008. Do you get recognized in the US when you go out? Lisa RN: Yes but I have no problem saying hi to people and taking pictures.
When your family and team are watching you play they always appear very calm and dignified. I wondered if any of your family or friends find it too exciting or too difficult to watch? Bev RN: Maybe, but I suppose you have to ask them ( กองเชียร์ยังเครียดเลยค่ะพ่อคุ๊นนน )
What is the first thing you do when you wake up? Axèle RN: I have a look at the internet. [all of it?]
Have you ever played competitively against Uncle Toni? If so, who won and how old were you? Atch RN: No, never. Too easy
How much of your personal life truly affects your game (besides injury) and do you still work on improving your English on a consistent basis? Michelle, Caribbean RN: I am working on my English every day... with travelling.
Not much to say today since most of you probably saw the match.
I managed to win in straight sets which is not bad. Nico Almagro is a player that can cause some trouble since he hits very hard. I had some problems with my serve, nothing new but I am happy that after so much time without competition I am back. I am going to give everything here.
I will go out on Tuesday and compete. Play. There were lots of rumours today before I went to press saying I would retire. Well, that's not going to be the case and you will see me paying on Tuesday.
I simply I didn't want to talk at the press conference about any injuries. I think I have done that to much lately (because I have been injured) but now I don't feel I want to talk about it more.
Rafa
Do you welcome fame or would you rather be able to play tennis without being in the public eye? Katharine RN: I love to play tennis in front of big crowds and against the best players in the World. That's something unique and exciting
Do you have any contact with Carlos Moya and do you think he will come back on tour? Saskia RN: Yes I do, I speak on the phone to him a lot. He is practicing again and will be back at the beginning of next year.
What size t-shirt do you wear when you play? Or are they made-to-measure? Chandra RN: Custom made. But I think it would be an M
We all know that you are a good cook ... so if you had to cook a romantic dinner for two, what would be on the menu? Anna RN: Not sure about that! About being a good cook. For a romantic dinner I go out to a restaurant.
I've seen your biography in many of the book stores around the UK, but would you ever consider writing an autobiography? Haychee RN: Yes I am, but I'll wait a little bit. That biography you've seen I never saw it so I am not sure it is very credible.
I'm curious what it is that Maymo records during your practice and what you do with the information? Holly RN: I have to ask him, really. He writes EVERYTHING

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 I don't like playing late at night - we asked to move Monfils match
Hello everybody,
Remember that at each time I blog there is that day where I don't know what to say? Well, today is that day. Not really sure what I am going to write.
I am in my room with Tuts, the Nike guy from Spain that follows me is here since he arrived today from Barcelona. He arrived and will stay until the end of my tournament. Let's hope he made the trip until the week end. We are here and he is helping me tonight with this blog. The person who normally helps me is not here tonight since he is at the stadium watching Novak play.
We are here watching TV and talking about different things. It's been a while since we didn't speak since I have been away from home now for 4 weeks. Time goes fast. Already 4 weeks competing away. But the thing is that I am very happy since I am playing. One month at home goes slowly, but competing it goes faster. It is funny that people many times want what they don't have. If you are away you want to be home and if you are home you want to be away . In my case I want to be playing!
Tomorrow I don't have to awake early. Total opposite since I am only coming to the tournament site at 4 pm, warm up and play last match. Once again I am playing last match of the day. To be honest we requested to play a bit earlier... น่าน้อยใจแทนราฟายิ่งนัก

Tuesday, September 08, 2009 Rafa replies: My Olympic gold medal is very precious to me
Do you wear sunscreen? Sia RN: Not normally
When you play on grass, you stand much closer to return serve, and you don't try to run around to hit a forehand on serve returns. Why don't you apply these same tactics on the fast US Open court? Kal Hadi RN: The bounce is different so you have to be ready in a different way.
I told my Mallorcan boyfriend that you are always very polite and respectful and that you have never broken a tennis racquet. He laughed and said there is no way that you have never ever smashed a tennis racquet. Have you ever broken one? Niamh, Ireland RN: I have never smashed it or broken it on purpose.
Do you also take the vitamin supplement you take before every match when you practice? Cheenie, Philippines RN: No, never
I am curious as to where you have placed your Olympic gold medal. Is is displayed nicely or being protected by a sock or something? Rebecca, Los Angeles RN: At home. It is very precious to me. Special place for sure
Do you think you can be a good tennis teacher or coach? Is that something that you imagine for the future, either with kids or adults? Mathilde, France RN: I am not sure about that. I don't see myself in the future as a coach but you never know...
Picking up the right ball to serve: do you choose it always on the same basis, or does it depend upon the sort of serve you are trying each time? Julio, Madrid RN: It depends what you are looking for such as fast serve or slower.
Were you a good student when you studied in school? Have you been criticised by your teacher? What was your reaction to it? Lulu RN: Not a very good one I have to say. But I wasn't bad either.
Do you think there's any resemblance between Uncle Toni and the tennis player Jesse Witten? Kilana RN: I really don't think so although some people told me.
I saw maria sharapova hit a forehand with her right hand and then pass her racquet to her left hand and stretched to hit a forehand with her left hand on the opposite side of the court. is that something you have considered trying, or is it too unnatural now to try to use your right hand for a forehand, even when the ball is out of reach for your backhand shot? Lisa, Ohio RN: No, I don't think about this. I am cool with my forehand and my double handed backhand
Do you think there's any resemblance between Uncle Toni and the tennis player Jesse Witten? Kilana RN: I really don't think so although some people told me.

Q. The hand was bothering you on the return, is that what you're saying?
ANDY MURRAY: No, regardless of my wrist, it has you know, I lost the match. I returned poorly and he served well, and, you know, that was really the difference, guess. I felt like in the first set, you know, when I was getting into the rallies I was able to move him around and have my chances. And then, you know, once he got the first set, he started serving well and started playing really aggressive. He was shanking a lot of forehands in the first set. Then in the second he started dropping in, and then he started hitting the ball very clean after that and dictated all of the points.
Q. Usually you can, on days like this, find a way to win. What was the reason for not being able to do that today?
ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, don't know. You know, that's why I'm disappointed. You know, I just didn't you know, I didn't find a way to get myself into the match. There was very few long rallies after the first set, and normally, you know, I'm able to get myself into rallies. But, you know, I guess on the return, you know, every time I had a chance, you know, he would hit a big serve or I would hit a poor return, especially on the second serve. You know, just a lot allowed him to dictate the play. Normally the return is the one part of my game where, you know, even if the rest of my game is struggling, I find ways to break serve and get into points, and I didn't do that.
Q. Your body language seemed pretty flat for you. Is that as a result of sort of the wrist thing bugging you at the back of your mind?
ANDY MURRAY: I don't know what it was. Like I said, you know, against Capdeville I felt a little bit low on energy. And it's not an excuse, but it's not good in a Grand Slam to feel that way. You know, and like I say, I felt just when the match started to get away from me. I don't know, I just couldn't get myself into enough return games and couldn't quite find a way to get myself back into the match. You know, I mean, a lot of times when I lose, I always get asked that, you know, if it's due to you looked flat. But that's not always the case and why I lost. But today, you know, I just couldn't find my way into games and he was dominating a lot of the points, so it's difficult to get into it.
Q. Patrick McEnroe said on commentary that you mentally went away in the second and third sets. Is that a harsh comment?
ANDY MURRAY: No, I mean, I think one of the things about me that I've been very good at the last couple of years, I've been saying that I find ways to get back into the matches mentally, and I think very strong. You know, today I mean, I could have been better in pretty much every part of the game, whether it was mental or serve, forehand, backhand returns. I don't know. I mean, they're entitled to their own opinion. I'll let them have it.
Q. There were some people that were picking you to win this tournament coming in. Did you ever feel any pressure or expectations on you?
ANDY MURRAY: No. I mean, I put pressure on myself to win the tournaments. You know, it doesn't I mean, it's nice to hear sometimes from the other players or, you know, ex players, but it doesn't really make a difference to who win who wins or loses the tournament. They're not out there on the court with you, so it doesn't make any difference.
Q. Would you say this is the biggest disappointment of your career so far?
ANDY MURRAY: My tennis career, yeah. I mean, worse things have happened to me, that's for sure. In terms of tennis, you know, I guess that you know, it's just kind of the way the match went, I think, really, makes it disappointing. But, you know, I believe that I'll come back better from it. I'll learn a lot from what happened this week, like I have done most times when I've had bad results. You know, I'll come back better and stronger.
