Interview : Feliciano Lopez : « Rafa realises that Toni is doing an extraordinary job »

By Apolline Céleste, April 6, 2009 – welovetennis.fr

Putting the last hand on the next edition of the GrandChelem special « Tous coach » , we used 3 interviews our journalist Krystel Roche did for the previous edition but that were never published in full: Rafael Nadal by Feliciano Lopez, Grigor Dimitrov and Gilles Simon.
We begin with the first on that list.

Q : Feliciano, you and Rafa often tease each other on court ?
Feli: Yes, always…I tease him as well. We have known each other for so long, we constantly joke around. We know each other through and through and it’s always been like that. In general, the atmosphere among the Spanish players is excellent. Rafa is very funny, his uncle as well. They always try to pull pranks on everybody. Especially on me!

Q: You don't have a problem with that?
Feli : No, no !! No problem (smiles). Because it’s always done in good spirit, to have a laugh. It’s never nasty. I understand his jokes and he understands mine : we never do it to annoy each other.

Q: Today, it’s getting harder to make fun of him…
Feli: Now, I can no longer make fun of his game! (laughs) He’s the best player in the world so…I can only shut up! But what is certain is that when we do mock each other, it’s always done in good spirit. When I told him that he needed to improve his game or his serve or whatever, I really only said that to tease him. When we play together, we constantly tease each other and we take turns making fun of each other’s game.

Q : What impresses you the most in him ?
Feli: What impresses most people above all is his game. When I saw him the first time, quite frankly, I never thought that he was going to reach this level, that he would be this good. He has done everything to improve each year and, as you can see, each season. Rafa has gradually brought his game to a higher level. The first time I’ve seen him was in Barcelona. He must have been 12 or 13 years old and he was playing a tournament…for 14 year-olds. I watched his match for 5 minutes: it was enough to impress me because the way he fights. He was very aggressive on court, despite his young age. The second time was in Sevilla for a Challenger. We were training together and I was very amazed with the way he trains and the way he behaves on court. He wanted to win each point! After two or three shots, he tried to make a winning point…I was really surprised to see with what sort of authority he tried to that. (smiles)

Q: Did you think that he would one day be the world number one?
Feli: I knew that he was going to be a really, really good player. I had no doubt that he would one day be in the top ten. Each year, he improved and each year, he impressed me more. I think that this is the real key to his game: he improves every season. If you compare his game of 2005 when he won Roland Garros for the first time with his game now…sheesh…He’s a totally different player and he’s only 22 years old!

Q: Do you think that he will continue to improve?
Feli: Yes, of course. He has so many years ahead of him and his margin of progression is enormous. And Rafa is deeply convinced that he needs to improve. Each year, it’s more difficult, the pressure increases each year. Now that he’s the number one, everybody wants to beat hm. So, this leaves him without any doubt whatsoever: he really wants to improve his game.

Q : Is his upbringing one of the secrets of his success ?
Feli, Yes! Since he started playing tennis, he knew that he needed to stay humble and work hard to stay on top and I think that he managed to do so. It’s helped him a lot, that’s certain.

Q: Does he train more than the others?
Feli, He’s probably one of the players who train the most. In the end, no matter if it’s a match or a training session, he always uses the same sort of concentration and the same sort of intensity.

Q: Is the fact that he lives on an island important?
Feli: I don’t think that the fact that he’s an islander is one of the secrets of his success. Everybody has a home. Of course, Rafa has always been supported by his close ones, his family, his friends. But…after all, every player has that. Rafa is a guy who loves to return home whenever he can after a tournament. He’s deeply attached to his country, his island. He loves to fish and do all sorts of things there. Of course, returning to Mallorca regularly helps him. But it’s helpful to every player to go home in between two tournaments. No more, no less.

Q: What is the position of his uncle Toni?
Feli: In my opinion, Toni is quite simply the ideal person for Rafa. He takes care of him since forever and his influence is undeniably very important. Since he was very small, Rafa has always spend his days with him. They have so many things in common. Rafa’s behaviour on court, his state of mind, his way of staying positive: this is in part the result of Toni’s work. It’s his uncle and it’s not always easy to work with a member of your family. But I think that they have a great relationship and Rafa is aware of the fact that Toni is doing an extraordinary job for him. His uncle is somebody who has been very close in his career.

Q: Is being a lefty an advantage?
Feli : No, I don’t think it’s an advantage. There are several of us on tour (maybe 7 or 8 lefthanders in the top 100), the majority of players are righthanded. It does perhaps explain that it complicates things for them to play against one of us, quite simply because they’re not used to it but it’s just a matter of getting used to it, nothing more.

Q: What do you think about his rivalry with Federer?
Feli: The rivalry between Rafa and Roger is very good for a sport like tennis. But I think that Rafa would have improved, even without Roger. It’s part of his state of mind: to look for improvements, again and again, always, no matter who the opponent is.

Mikhail, you beat Rafa in four occasions in eleven confrontations: twice in Dubai (2004, 2007), once at the U.S. Open (2006) and twice in Chennai (2008). Few players have to face such a ratio to the current world No 1. What are the keys to beat him? Do you have a particular tactic to dominate?
I can not say that I have a special tactic to beat him. All matches are different. Maybe I was in shape (smile) ... Our first meeting took place in 2004, Rafa was still very young. When I fought in Chennai (6-0, 6-1), he had fought the day before a game facing extremely tough to Carlos Moya (6-7 (3), 7-6 (8), 7-6 ( 1) for 3 hours and 55 minutes of play, ie). But I can not say that I have a "anti-Nadal." Rafa has made great progress this year, or rather in recent years. In this context, it's hard to say that there is a "plan" to beat him. We can not say "Here, you have to play like this, like that, and you will beat him, for sure." I sincerely believe that for any player, it is very hard to address it.

What do you most in tennis it produces?
It is truly an incredible flying on the court. Regardless of the score, whatever its form at the moment, he abandons any ball. Rafa has a fighting spirit extraordinary. I like his way of fighting on the ground. Even if he is in a bad shape, you do not see it, for the simple reason that which it shows nothing in match. Impossible to know if he is not fit, if tired or anything. Nobody can detect it . he does not show when he has a problem.

What you say in leaving the court after being played?
Mikhail Youzhny: When you play opposite to him is always difficult. No player likes to play ... When you see in the draw, you just hope that your name will be far away from his, to play as late as possible, perhaps in the semi-final or final (smile) . But the draw is what it is, we must make do. I can only say that it is still extremely difficult to play Rafa.

Education that Rafa has received: a factor in its success?
It's hard to say. Everyone knows Nadal as a "top player". To answer this question, we should know exactly how hewas before, when he was in juniors, for example, when he just started his career. Already, when he was top 50, it was already very strong, and we could see that it was an exceptional player. But we could not even imagine how far it could go ... I think that at present, nobody can really assess how far Rafa can go, how it can be further developed, where it stops. Today it is No. 1 worldwide, but it is still young. He won four times in a row Roland Garros four times Monte Carlo, he won an incredible number of matches on clay last season ... He played unbelievable, but at his age, he already has problems with his knee ... Nobody knows what can happen in the future. he may well be hurt seriously and stop his career, or being No. 1 worldwide for a long time, as Roger (Federer), and win plenty of Grand Slam tournaments, as have done Roger or Pete (Sampras). Rafa has proven to everyone that was able to win all the tournaments and win Grand Slams on any surface. He at three consecutive finals at Wimbledon, and won the last. He also won the Queens. Nobody can say that Rafa is a simple player to land. His game has changed, evolved. Earlier in his career, he dominated mainly on clay, it's true. But today is different, you can win everywhere.

Is he train more than the others? Does it have the same level standard/puts it the same pressure at the drive as in match?

I do not know how he trains “at tho,e”. It is not similar when you train yourself at home, that you prepare a large tournament or that you prepare the season, or when you train yourself only one or two hours per day in tournament. Afterwards, when you train with him, I would say that … very well trained! (to smile). But it is not obvious to say that it is trains more, or better, that other players.

Island: does it play?
We travel all year long, and sometimes we need to come home. Enjoy simply moments with our family, our friends. Some players support more or less to travel, stay away from their families. Rafa may be returned home only two or three days to a week here and there, but in any case, after that, he is ready to go and win a few Grand Slam! (laughs)

What is the role of Toni?
Mikhail Youzhny: Difficult question ... hard to judge how much the player-coach relationship can influence the results. In order to make an opinion on the issue, one must know the whole story since the beginning. How they work. Toni helped Rafa to get such good results, led him to this level, no doubt. Rafa continues to progress, constantly improving his game Ok So, one can say that Rafael progress alone, but I remain convinced that having Toni to help him enormously, he brings a lot. If Rafa changes a coach, it might be the difference. It could, perhaps, be better ... Or just the opposite.

Could you train with your uncle ...
Well ... should try ... (smile)

To be left-handed: an advantage? ส้มชอบคำตอบ ยูชนี่มาก ๆ
Not necessarily . To be left-handed present advantages, but also of the disadvantages. When a guy plays, he does not say himself “Hold, so-and-so is left-handed, I do not like to play against him” or “I never succeeded in playing against a left-handed person”. You can say yourself “I never succeeded in beating Nadal”. That, yes. But not “I never succeeded in beating a left-handed person” (to smile). I think that one can rather make a blocking on the name of his adversary than on the fact that it is left-handed, or not.

Is the rivalry with Federer has helped?
Mikhail Youzhny: It's good, because they help both, they mutually advance. Previously, it was Roger who occupied the place of No. 1. Today, Rafa is No. 1 worldwide, but does not stop there, always progressing. Look: he has won the Australian Open ... Now the question is: what Roger is able to compete this season Rafa? We'll see what happens (smile) ...

ส้มภาษณ์น้องต๊อบค่ะ
What do you say you while going out of the current after playing Rafael Nadal to Rotterdam?
The first thing that I was said, that was: "Ouahou, I really did that! I went on the current, I fought against Rafa, and that lasted 2h30!" I so was excited that I was not able to sleep the night that followed the encounter (to smile)… quite frankly, I did not expect to play a so good game (especially the 2nd set). But I was really inside, I took advantage of every bullet to melts. For me, this was an unbelievable game. I showed beautiful things that day.

Do you ever seen Rafa in training?
I trained with him several times and now I played against him. It is an incredible player. In training, everyone is not what he does ... I think the key to its success, it is very constant, very consistent. There are no ups and downs. And it remains highly concentrated: it helps a lot to develop his game now he is trying more and more things on the court, has more confidence in his shots. For me, that's why it is No. 1 worldwide. All players have talent. The question is just how you develop, how you exploit this talent. This is exactly the same process with the studies. It depends on what you do with your talent ...

What the importance of education in the career of a player?
Of course, education is a factor for success. The school is obviously an important part of life for everyone. I think it is very important for an athlete-whatever the discipline to have some education in order to do what he wants more. For me, education is something very important. I think that most parents hope their children will be well educated, they will behave well in life. They try to find the best way to do this, to make their children follow the right path. For any parent, it is important to raise her child. And when you receive a good education, you develop your skills: this is you in the future, whatever you do.

How important is his uncle Toni?
It is certainly the best person to coach Rafa. For now, their combination works quite well! (smile) The most important thing is simply that Rafael will feel with his coach. This helps mentally. If feels good with the people around him, he is happy ... And it works! Rafa and Toni operate in a certain way for years, we implemented a game, and, somehow, their 'routine'. Toni works hard for Rafa, Rafa and absolute trust dedicated to his uncle. It is not always easy to have someone in your family involved in your career ... It depends on the relationship between two people. I think they have found their balance. This balance has enabled Rafa to be as strong as it is currently, and have won so many tournaments.

Is it a real advantage of being left-handed?
Yes, maybe ... Personally, no matter that my opponent is left handed or right, it does not bother more than that. Being left-handed may be an advantage, but hey, it all depends on the situation. Anyway, it is left-handed, and ... it's like that, he can not change! (smile)

What do you think of his duel with Federer?
Both are great fighters. Recently, I saw Roger lost a lot of times against Rafa. But I do not really discuss why and how Roger has lost, or whatever. It does not look at me. I love these two players, I love the way they play. So may the best man win! I do not want to take the risk of saying something through. I do not age, and I am not yet at the top level, so I did not speak, my opinion is worth nothing.

Rafa has a big psychological ascendancy over his opponent when he enters the field?
Yes, clearly. For me, this is one of the guys more "fit" of the circuit. He runs very, very well, grew in an incredible way. His leg game makes it even more dangerous. Besides that, mentally, it is very, very strong, not loose anything, is still struggling to 200%

What do you think of his wish during the match against Verdasco?
As for Rafa: no doubt his wish was fulfilled. It has well gone sacramen! There is very superstitious ... Me too! I am very, very superstitious! But I do tell you for now. Another time, perhaps ... (smile)
