What is a confirmation of acceptance for studies?

A CAS is not an actual certificate or paper document - it is a virtual document, similar to a database record. A sponsor can assign a CAS using our sponsorship management system (SMS), which will generate a unique CAS reference number.

Once you have assigned a CAS, you must give the unique CAS reference number to the migrant so that they can apply to us for permission to stay in the United Kingdom as a Tier 4 (Child) student. You may also want to give information from the CAS (such as the fees paid to date and the qualifications assessed) to the student, to help with their application to us.

When you give the unique CAS reference number to the migrant, you should treat it as a secure and confidential document.

A CAS is valid for six months from the date when it is assigned. If the migrant does not use it within this period to apply for permission to stay under Tier 4, it will automatically become invalid.

A CAS can be used only once. When a migrant applies to us for permission to stay, their submitted CAS is marked by us as having been used - it cannot then be used again. In addition, any other CAS given to the student by other potential sponsors will be marked by us as obsolete. (Sponsors will not be refunded if their CAS is marked as obsolete.)
