อำเภอแม่สาย เป็นอำเภอเหนือสุดของจังหวัดเชียงรายและเหนือสุดของประเทศไทยตั้งที่ว่าการที่ตำบลเวียงพางคำ มีด่านชายแดนไทย-พม่าเรียกว่า "ด่านแม่สาย"สามารถผ่านด่านข้ามไปยังจังหวัดท่าขี้เหล็กของพม่าได้โดยมีแม่น้ำสายเป็นพรมแดนทางธรรมชาติการคมนาคมจากอำเภอเมืองเชียงรายไปอำเภอแม่สายโดยทางหลวงหมายเลข 1 (พหลโยธินตอนเชียงราย-แม่สาย) ระยะทาง 63 กิโลเมตร

Mae Sai is the northernmost district of Chiang Rai Province innorthern Thailand. The town of Mae Sai is a major border crossingbetween Thailand and Myanmar. Asian Highway Network AH2 ThailandRoad 1 or Phahonyothin Road crossesthe Mae Sai River to the town Tachileik in Myanmar.

1. ตลาดท่าขี้เหล็ก

ตลาดท่าขี้เหล็กบนฝั่งพม่าชายแดนเป็นเมืองชายแดนที่มีอยู่ทั่วไปหมดจดในการค้าบางคนบอกว่าการค้าหลบระหว่างไทยและพม่ามีตลาดขนาดใหญ่เดินไปรอบ ๆ และค่อนข้างคล้ายกับสิ่งที่คุณพบในประเทศไทย นักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยนิยมเดินทางไปยังตลาดแม่สายและท่าขี้เหล็กของพม่าเพื่อซื้อสินค้าพื้นเมืองและสินค้าราคาถูก เช่น สบู่สุมนไพร เครื่องทองเหลืองตะกร้า การข้ามไปท่าขี้เหล็ก นักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยเดินทางข้ามเขตประเทศพม่าได้ทุกวัน ระหว่างเวลา 06.30- 18.00 น. โดยใช้บัตรประชาชนหรือบัตรอื่นๆ ที่ทางราชการออกให้ ค่าบริการคนละ 40บาท สินค้าที่ไม่อนุญาตให้ซื้อเข้าไทยได้แก่ สินค้าจาก สัตว์ป่า สุรา บุหรี่ต่างประเทศและซีดีลามกอนาจารหากซื้อมาเพื่อการค้าต้องเสียภาษีนำเข้าให้ถูกต้องด้วย

Tachileik Market

            Tachileik, on the Myanmar side ofthe border, is a typical border town that exists purely on the trade, some say,dodgy trade, between Thailand and Myanmar. There's a large market here which Iwent around and was fairly similar to what you find in Thailand except that itsells a large quantity of items that would get you into a good deal of troublewith your customs authority back home such as flip-knives, guns etc. Themajority of people crossing over to Myanmar are Thais shopping for bootleggedChinese goods. You can find all the latest DVD's at prices ranging from 40Baht. Knocked off prescription drugs (in particular Viagra) and X rated filmsare carried around by very annoying, but licensed hawkers. Do not buy thecigarettes as they are usually Burmese knock offs put into western brandedpackages and will likely get you into trouble when you try and return intoThailand.

2. วัดพุทธสถานถ้ำปลา

         วัดถ้ำปลา หรือ วัดพุทธสถานถ้ำปลา ระยะทาง 13km (8 ไมล์) ทางทิศใต้ของอำเภอแม่สายโดยภายในวัดจะมีถ้ำปลา มีลักษณะเป็นลำธารเล็ก ๆ ไหลออกจากใต้ภูเขาหินปูน สามารถซื้ออาหารให้ปลาได้ในราคากระป๋องละ20-30 บาท นอกจากถ้ำปลาแล้วเรายังสามารถเดินขึ้นเขาไปไหว้พระพุทธรูปศิลปะพม่าที่ประดิษฐานอยู่ภายในถ้ำ พร้อมชมวิวมุมกว้างได้อีกด้วย ที่ต้องระวังกันซักนิดเมื่อมาเยือนที่นี่ก็คือบริเวณวัดมีลิงป่าฝูงใหญ่อาศัยอยู่บนยอดเขาเหนือปากถ้ำ คนท้องถิ่นจึงเรียกชื่อวัดด้วยอารมณ์ขันว่า"วัด ถ้ำลิง" ที่พวกมันมักจะลงมาหาอาหารจากนักท่องเที่ยว แย่งของที่นักท่องเที่ยวถือหรือสะพายอยู่ซึ่งลิงป่าพันธุ์นี้ชื่อพันธุ์  “ไอ้เนี๊ยะ” สายพันธุ์เดียวกับลิงที่อำเภอทองผาภูมิ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรีซึ่งมีเพียงสองแห่งในประเทศไทย นับเป็นลิงที่สมควรอนุรักษ์ แต่ถ้าใครพาลูกพาหลานไปก็อย่าให้เดินซนเดี๋ยวจะโดนลิงลักไป

Wat Tham Pla/Monkey Cave Temple

Wat Tham Pla means fishtail and this temple is found about 13km (8 miles) south of Mae Sai. The templeis also known as the Monkey Cave Temple after the macaques that live here. Theyare not usually aggressive though and only stay in one area near the fish pondand shrine to Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy who is very popular with theChinese. The temple itself is fairly good with a very old looking lateritechedi but beware of the unpredictable monkeys.
