ประวัติแมวมีชื่อเรียกทั่วไปในภาษาลาตินว่า"เฟลิส คาตัส" (FelisCatus) เป็นสัตว์เก่าแก่ดึกดำบรรพ์แมวมีอยู่ในทุกทวีป รูปร่างลักษณะและโครงสร้างคล้ายคลึงกันแต่ขนาดอาจผิดกันและความยาวของขนต่างกัน แมวเมืองหนาวมีขนยาวกว่าแมวในเมืองร้อนแมวที่นิยมเลี้ยงกันมีหลายพันธุ์ เช่นพันธุ์เปอร์เซียและพันธุ์ไทยเป็นต้นชาวตะวันตกเชื่อว่าแมวนั้นเดิมเป็นสัตว์ในแอฟริกาชาวอียิปต์นำมาเลี้ยงไว้ในบ้าน แมวจึงอยู่กับคนเรื่อยมา จนในที่สุดเผ่าพันธุ์ของแมวก็กระจายไปทุกหนทุกแห่งทั่วโลก แมวพันธุ์แรกคือ อบิสซีเนียขายาวหน้าแหลมยาว ต่อมาจึงมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปร่างลักษณะออกไปต่างๆนานาตามหลักทางชีววิทยา แต่แมวที่ยังคงลักษณะรูปเดิม คือมีรูปร่างเพรียว หน้าแหลมตาคม สัญนิฐานว่าเหลือเพียงสามพันธุ์ในโลก คือ แมวอบิสซิเนียน แมวอียิปต์และแมวไทยแมวทั้งสามพันธุ์นี้หน้าตาไม่แตกต่างกันมากนักสองชนิดแรกสัญนิฐานว่าอาจสูญพันธุ์ไปแล้ว คงเหลือแต่"แมวไทย"ที่นับเป็นพันธุ์เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลก
