เพลง Baa Baa Black sheep แต่งเมื่อปี 1761 ร้องโดยใช้ทำนองเพลงของฝรั่งเศสที่ชื่อ "Ah! vous dirai-je, Maman" ซึ่งเพลง "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" และเพลง "the Alphabet song" ก็นำทำนองเพลงนี้มาร้องเหมือนกัน ส่วนเนื้อเพลง ที่มีมากว่าสองศตวรรษครึ่ง ได้ถูกเปลี่ยนแปลงไปบ้างเพียงเล็กน้อยเท่านั้น
