โรคทางพันธุกรรมที่พบได้ในบีเกิ้ล Cherry eye Definition: This conditionis simply an enlargement of the gland of the third eyelid with resultant prolapse. It is thought to be due to either inflammation and/or a lack of connective tissue bands which hold the gland in place. It is unsightly but probably does not bother the dog much. This small gland provides 30% of the aqueous portion of the tear film, so surgical removal, which in the past was the treatment, leaves the dog more susceptible to developing dry eye syndrome if the remainder of the tear productionis compromised. Dry Eye Syndrome (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca) This is a serious disease. Painful for the beagle, KCScan result in severe ulceration and scarring of the cornea and blindness, and may eventually require removal of the eveball. Cause: Drying of the cornea results from inadequate tear production. Tear glands may be defective as a result of sever systemic infection, such as canine parvovirus or canine distemper. Surgical removal of the third evelid gland may be at fault. Some oral sulfa medications have triggered KCS. If the nerves to the tear glands are not functioning properly, the beagle may also have a dry nostril on one side. Recent reports indicate that dogs with dry eye may occasionally be hypothyroid. While supplementation of such dogs with thyroid does not increase tear production, it has been shown to improve the health of the eye tissues. Glaucoma Definition: is an eye problem that researchers have found Beagles, as well as other breeds, to be prone to developong. The problem results when the normal fluids within the eyeball fail to drain normally back into the bloodstream. When this happens, too much pressure builds up in the eye. The pressure increases to above normal levels and can eventually cause damage to the optic nerve. Symtoms and signs: Signs of glaucoma can appear gradually or duddenly. As pressure builds up, the retina and optic nerve become damaged, eventually leading to blindness. Epelepsy Definition: is a dysfunction of the brain that manifests ifself with some type of seizure. The seizures may vary from mild to severe, in some cases causing death. A convulsive seizure is evidence of an electrical storm in teh brain. This abnormal electrical activity is a phenomenon caused by the physical and chemicla makeup of the discharging cells in teh brain. The overactivity of these cells produces disturbances in consciousness and in muscular coordination. Therefore, the primary cause is chemical, or more appropriately, electrophysicochemical. But the chain of events leading up to the brain's chemical reaction can be infinitely varied. This variation is what makes veterinarians so cautious about giving pat answers. Epilepsy is not a specific disease but, rather, a set of sysptoms that can result fom many causes. There are three main types of seizures, and if your dog has appeared to have any of them, he is a strong candidate for epilepsy, petit mall, grand mal, and psychomotor. Hypothyoidism is the generalized metabolic disease resulting from the deficiency of the thyroid hormones, tetraiodotyronine or thyroxined and/or triiodothyronine. The disease develops gradually after the onset of puberty, and typical signs tend to occur in midlife. In nearly 90% of cases, the cause of canine hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroiditis; the remainder have thyroid atrophy of unknown cause. Signs and Symptoms If the tyyroid gland is not producing enough hormonal material, an animal becomes affected with a wide variety of physical problems. The clinical signs and sysptoms in most dogs include: lethargy; fatigue; reduced alertness; excitability; poor appetite; weight gain; dry sparse coat; skin infections and flea allrgy; food allergy; smelly and greasy skin that becomes blackened or thickened and scaly; arthritis and stiff git; smelly ears due to excessive wax produciton and ear infections; dry eye syndrome; anemia; a bleeding tendency; mild chronic liver, kidney, pancreas or adrenal dysfunction; seizures; muscle weakness and reproductive problems. Usually a dog won't show all of these symptoms, but most will show several.
