They are three wooden structures made of two octagonal prisms, one on top of the other, supported internally by a wooden frame which has a bar going through it from top to bottom. This bar comes through to the outside and forms two pegs. The bottom peg fixes into a carrying frame called a "barella" which is carried on the shoulders.
The top peg is used to fix one of the three little statues who represent the saints who protect the corporations: St Ubaldo (patron and protector of the city) for the builders, St George for the shopkeepers and St Anthony for the country folk. These three parts are put together for the festival on the 15th May. During the year the Ceri and their frames are kept in the Basilica of St Ubaldo at the top of mount Ingino, while the statues of the saints are kept in the little church of St Francesco della Pace, otherwise known as the Builders'church, in Via Savelli.
Argeo Nuti, sculptor of the Saints.
There are no documents with pictures of the Ceri before the 19th century. At that time they already had a similar shape to the actual Ceri. The visible part of the Cero is made of fir panels fixed onto a central structure of elm, and the rest is made of beech and oak. Every Cero is more or less egg timer shaped, it becomes narrow at the centre, and there are three rings around it. It also has the so-called "manicchie", pairs of wooden bars attached to the sides.
The evening before the festival the Ceri are decorated with little gold swallow-tailed flags at the top and with gold tassels at the bottom. These get torn off by the ceraioli on the morning of the 15th and kept as souvenirs.
The frame which supports the Cero and which is carried on the shoulders during the race is H shaped. It is made of two parallel wooden pales with a wooden board called the "barelone" between them, which the Cero is fixed onto. The free parts of the frame are also called "manicchie", and this word is also used to talk about the group of ceraioli who change places under the Cero, chosen from among the families and friends from the various zones that the ceraiolo territory is divided into.
