Booking Through Thursday

I’ve seen this series of questions floating around the ‘net the last few days, and thought it looked like a good one for us!

What was the last book you bought?
I can't remember, honestly!

Name a book you have read MORE than once
I keep rereading The Ordinary Princess (by M.M. Kaye) from time to time. It's a very lovely story.

Has a book ever fundamentally changed the way you see life? If yes, what was it?
Not, and never, a single book. But I think a big pile of books might do the trick. :P

How do you choose a book? eg. by cover design and summary, recommendations or reviews
It depends. Good cover designs certainly catch the eyes, and most summaries are fun to read. Some reviewers are quite reliable as well. But I think, eventually, I chose from the overall effect.

Do you prefer Fiction or Non-Fiction?
Fiction, certainly. I'm a creature that feeds on good stories!

What’s more important in a novel - beautiful writing or a gripping plot?
I need, and want, both (plus a thought-provoking meaning). However, if I have to choose, I prefer the plot. I can enjoy good plots with relatively bad writing, but can't stand elaborate writing that is full of air.

Most loved/memorable character (character/book)
I adore Huang Yaoshi (黃藥師) (epithet: the "Eastern Heretic" [“東邪”]). He is a character in two martial arts novels by Jin Yong. Even some works by Jin Yong were already translated into English. Still, the English-reading community is not fortunate enough to get to know this great character. haha.

Master Huang is a genius that talented in both martial arts and intellectual skills, and has attitude about established tradition and moral in a very existentialist way.

Which book or books can be found on your nightstand at the moment?
The Wind-up Bird Chronicle (Haruki Murakami) and The Dante Club (Matthew Pearl). What a suitable books for bedtime. haha.

What was the last book you’ve read, and when was it?
I've just finished Raggity and the Cloud by Sofia Prokofeva few days ago. I found this old, out-of-print children book in an online store. Really miss this kind of children book, simple but magical.

And now I'm in the middle of reading Mister Pip (by Lloyd Jones).

Have you ever given up on a book half way in?
Sure! Everyone has, hasn't one?

Last question, giving up half way is not something unusual and cruel to the book.
Master Pip is interesting.
