Elements of Craftsmanship in Media Arts

In the media arts, how do you get from being pretty good, to really good, to great? There is a theory that if you practice for 10,000 hours you can master anything, and it has a lot of validity. Nothing replaces patient practice and experience won over time, but how you focus that practice, and process those experiences, will make a huge difference. This is the distinction between merely technical achievement and the kind of mastery that we call genius. Here are some specific steps you can take that will help make your journey more rewarding.

Understand the basic principles of art

Principles like balance, contrast, and proportion are important in any visual art discipline. Whether your subject matter is contemporary architecture or rainbows and unicorns, you'll create better work, and have more success, by understanding how to use these principles. Like most things related to art, there are many strong opinions about what makes an image beautiful. Read and write my essay, think, decide where you stand, then read some more, think again, and keep in mind: perhaps rules are made to be broken.

Understand the basic principles of design

Design and art are two different things, though the reasons they are different are cause for furious argument. You might say that design is a part of the art. This is because great art can happen with no (or almost no) design. Great design is impossible without attention to the principles of art. Why? Design, by definition, requires a plan and a purpose, while art can happen simply for the sake of itself. Plan and purpose are also what make the discussion about design for digital arts so very different from a discussion about design for furniture or buildings or electrical circuits.

To pursue craftsmanship in the digital arts, you can follow (even join) the ongoing debates in your field about what makes good design. It's also important to develop your own principles.

Master your software or software types

Sometimes, an artist will discover a particular art program and fall in love with it. That simplifies this element of craftsmanship, because you know what you want and will happily immerse yourself in that singular word. However, others of us are excited about the more general possibilities of digital illustration, web design, or 3D modeling, but are unsure which program to start with. If that's you, your best bet is to research the pros and cons of the top programs in your field and then pick one. As long as you are learning one good program, you're building mastery, and you're getting an understanding of the way creatives in your field are thinking. If a requirement comes along for a different program, you aren't starting at zero. The tougher programs will demand a can-do attitude (like all worthy challenges), but you'll be equipped with the fundamentals.

For example, all digital illustration software will expose you to the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color model. As you grow your skills, you'll also be exposed to concepts like image resolution and working with layers. These may work differently in different illustration software, but now you have an understanding of what they are and how they affect your artwork. You'll be able to learn, even master, the second program much more quickly than you did the first.

Focus on your personal superpowers

What do you love about what you do? What type of work do you get the most excited about? What are the questions you are trying to answer lately about color, composition, technical skill, etc.? It's the overlap and the tension between your personal passions and any external requirements that are where the sparks fly. While you should always be trying new things, also circle back around to your strengths. If you don't know what those are, find out.

How will you know when you've mastered your craft? It's wonderful to be recognized by peers and expert judges, those who share your values and ideals. On the other hand, the final judge, the one person who can say you accomplished what you set out to accomplish, is you.
