อีกหนึ่งรายการที่เพิ่งจะเริ่มสนใจสะสม นั่นคือ "แผ่นเสียง" คาดว่า ไม่นานนัก คงจะมีปริมาณที่เพิ่มขึ้นอย่างมากแน่นอน ดังนั้นจึงขอทำรายการที่ไปได้มาสะสมไว้เป็นระยะๆ เพื่อจะได้จำได้ว่ามีอะไรบนชั้นแผ่นเสียงบ้าง ประกอบกับ เมื่อช่วงที่ผ่านมาได้มีโอกาสไปเดินเล่นที่ "สนามหลวง 2" ใกล้ๆ กับ อุทยานพุธมณฑล ถนนพุทธมณฑลสาย 3 ได้ไปพบร้านทำตู้ปลาด้วยกระจก ... คุยสอบถามอยู่สักพัก ได้ความว่า สามารถทำได้ และราคายอมรับได้ จึงให้ดำเนินการมา 1 ตู้ เพื่อนำมาใช้เก็บแผ่นสียงเพื่อการนี้ ต่อไป

In the beginning there was the shattered sky. A window – slammed. The panes - shattered. No view of the surroundings. Inside: desolation. All over. As dramatic as this sounds, sometimes life's events can be just like this. But how often does everything seem to fall apart in our own lives? We experience this regularly.

Guitarist and composer Friedemann Witecka found a striking example of social collapse in the book Stasiland by Anna Funder, which was published in 2003. There he found the words: pieces of a shattered sky. Friedemann experienced his own world falling apart in 2010-11. And this new album came about in this way – at its beginning there was an end: Echoes Of A Shattered Sky. Apart from numerous collaborations with various musical partners, this is his ninth studio production in 35 years.

A new start emerged from the end, heralded by a colourful butterfly. Wing Your Way, Butterfly is the title of the musical interpretation of the oncoming break-down. The opener is also a key composition: it shows that Friedemann has remained true to himself while nevertheless expanding his horizons since his last albums such as Short Stories (2003) or Saitensprung (2007).

Break-ups and break-downs, but also experiences of landscapes and their inhabitants form the framework of this wide-ranging album. The rhythms and moods change accordingly. Even within the individual songs.

On Echoes Of A Shattered Sky Friedemann shows himself to be a composer who inhabits many worlds and his energetic sound also proves anew just why he is the indisputably the best nouvelle cuisine musician of current times.

(The term Seitensprung - literally side-step - is used in German for anything from a one-night stand to an affair outside a marriage or partnership. The pun with Saitensprung (hopping over the strings, same pronunciation) is obvious - translator’s note.)

Beyond Twang-Twang
At all his concerts since 1998 and on the CDs »Passion and Pride« and »Short Stories« Friedemann had always had his fabulous Franco-German ensemble at his side, with Philippe Geiss, saxophone, Emmanuel Séjourné, vibraphone and marimba, Markus Faller, drums and percussion; and Kurt Eisfeld on keyboards. The real proof of the quality and originality of this team was provided in 2005 with the live DVD »The Concert«.

So it is quite astounding that none of the gentlemen appeared here. What happened? Was there a row? Was the ensemble disbanded? What does "le chef" - as the French-speaking members of the group nickname him - have to say about it?

"When I was talking to my friend and colleague Büdi Siebert a while ago, he remarked that I ought to think about doing a production just with guitar. Oh dear, I thought, that’s not my thing at all. No colours or textures, no salt and pepper, no thunder and lightning. But I could not get the idea out of my head, because my fans had made similar suggestions too. And so began a voyage of discovery, an expedition which developed into more and more of an adventure. Is it possible to make sound events with guitars that go beyond just ‘twang-twang’? What does the guitar say when I hit it or stroke it, and can’t such sound samples be joined together to make sequences?"

Another impulse for this CD came from Friedemann’s work with fellow guitar player Christian Straube. While they were working on Christian’s production »Grand Cru« (Biber 76801) they didn’t just create exquisite recordings ("Audiophile CD of the month", Stereoplay magazine): it was also the beginning of a new close friendship extending far beyond the musical expectations of either of them. It was so strong that suddenly they were confronted with the idea of forming a duo - and the idea refused to go away again.

There it is again, the salt in Friedemann’s musical cuisine. The tracks played here, including compositions created and played with Christian Straube, offer the listener an extensive menu of sounds, spiced with ingenious nouvelle cuisine ingredients and therefore far more delicious than the somewhat limited range of flavours a single guitar can offer.

That does not mean, however, that this new project will deprive the fans of their accustomed comforts. The Friedemann Ensemble will continue to perform on stage and record together in the studio. Friedemann is just taking a pleasant bit of time out: jumping off the supertanker to have a ride on a motorboat.

Review
Too some, Al di Meola is best known for is shredding guitar work as part of Return to Forever, and also his early solo albums. But di Meola has always had an interest in flamenco styled acoustic playing ("Mediterranean Sundance" off of Elegant Gypsy, anyone?) -- which is the six-string style that he fully embraces on his 2007 release, Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, Vol. 1: Music of Astor Piazzolla. Like its title says, the album is comprised solely of renditions of tunes by Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla, who is best known for trailblazing the nuevo tango style (which contained traces of both jazz and classical). And di Meola has no problem offering up a fine tribute, especially on such tracks as "Campero" and "Romantico." With Diabolic Inventions and Seduction for Solo Guitar, one of the world's most technically gifted guitarists proves once and for all that he is also one of the most versatile, as well.

Biography
West German guitarist Friedemann Witecka is a popular arranger, producer, and studio musician in his homeland. His U.S. releases for Narada prove he's also one of the most imaginative composers of instrumental music influenced by rock and jazz fusion styles. This catchy, spirited music gracefully sidesteps most pop clichés.
