Religion

Religion is important to the Faroese and plays a role in most people's lives.

About 80 % of the population belong to the national church, 10 % to the open Brethren community (Plymuth Brethren, in Faroese: Brøðrasamkoman) and the rest belong to various other religious communities – most of them Christian.

Location and size

The Faroe Islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean halfway between Norway, Scotland and Iceland.

The size of the islands is 1399 square kilometres. 17 out of 18 islands are inhabitated.

The south - north distance is 113 kilometres, and east - west it is 75 kilometres.

On the 1st of January 2010, 48,650 people lived in the Faroe Islands.

Climate

The Faroe Islands have a temperate island climate, and weather changes a lot. One moment it's raining, the next moment the sun is shining.

The ocean never freezes. The average temperature is 3°Celsius in the winther and 11°Celsius in the summer. Compared to the northernly position the temperature is high. On good days the temperature can get very high in sheltered places.

The air is fresh and clean all year.

Exploring the capital.

Once you arrived back in the city, park your car near the harbour where parking is free for a limited time (just watch the signs to see how long time you have before you have to move the vehicle).

Tórshavn is the capital of the Faroe Islands and with 40% of the Faroese population living there, it is the most populous city in the country. But since the Faroe Islands only have just under 50.000 inhabitants, that puts the population of Tórshavn at around 20.000, making it one of the smallest capitals in the world.

Start off exploring the capital by walking around the harbour where fishermen sell their catch and the big cruise ships dock. Next up, we’ll explore what makes Tórshavn the cultural centre of the islands.

THE CASE OF KLAKSVIK

Klaksvik is the major Faroese fishery locality - always competing with

the capital, Torshavn. The fishing industry was dominated by one

entrepreneurial family - - from 1913 to the 1960's. Klaksvik is

well known for its strong networks including certain families, a

specific religious congregation, local saving bank and a dominant

political party (conservative and in favour of more independence from

Denmark). During the 1992-1996 crisis, the major fish processing plant

in Klaksvik managed to stay independent and outside of United Seafood

and its restructuring plans under Danish control. Already in May 1993,

the fish plant restructuring had been implemented with extended local

ownership and capital, including the local saving bank, the local trade

union, two local men managing the new firm, as well as 598 local

individual share owners (the last group controlling 17% of the total

capital stock). An important condition for the successful reconstruction

of this large fish plant has been a focused strategy on specialised

products and building relations with customers and sales organisations

other than United Seafood. In 1997 products from the plant were sold to

Marks and Spencer (UK), through Samband of Iceland (Icelandic - but only

in US), Coldwater (competing Icelandic in UK) and to Unilever

(semi-products to Germany). This is a case of local entrepreneurs

building on very strong local networks of capital and trust managing to

extend their networks to the outside world and building alliances with a

diversity of customers. This has been accomplished without jeopardising

the space for local action. The crucial factor, that made the

large-scale fish industry survive in Klaksvik, was the persistent local

control of resources: natural resources through a strong fishing fleet,

financial capital through the local saving bank (which contrary to the

national-level banks was not bankrupt) and social capital through

networks of families, religion and politics.

The five graves on the right are from an RAF Armstrong Whitworth Whitley which crashed on 9/11/1942 in the Faroe Islands after a patrol along the Hval Fjord in Iceland. They crashed in bad weather. Only one person survived. Two of the dead came from Australia and New Zealand, a long way from home.
