Interesting and unknown facts of Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is the large unfinished Roman Catholic Church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

 

1. The famous Sagrada Familia is one of the masterpieces of Antony Gaudi. The construction of the Sagrada Familia was started in 1882 and is still under construction. Only a quarter of the Basilica was completed in 1926 when Antony died. 

 

2. The iconic Sagrada Familia will take 150 years to build. That’s pretty amazing to think that It will have taken longer to build than the Egyptian Pyramids and only 50 years less than the Great Wall of China.

 

3. When the construction of the Sagrada Familia was started in 1826, Gaudi built a school near the site for the children of construction workers. It was made for the purpose of keeping the family of workers near them who spend their whole day in building this magnificent basilica.

 

4. When the construction of the Sagrada Familia was started in the 1800s, there were no technology and builders have to rely on paper sketches to correctly put the sketches. Thanks to the computer inventions and new technology due to which the building of structure sped up rapidly.

 

5. Though Sagrada Familia is still to complete, it was listed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage site in 1984 due to its unique architecture. This magnificent Basilica is among the seven buildings of Gaudi which is listed in UNESCO’s world heritage site. 

 

6. At present, there are only eight towers at the Sagrada Familia. When completed in 2026, there will be 18 significant towers. Four of the tower will represent the evangelists, Two of them will represent the apostles, one will be designated for the Virgin Mary, and the last one highest one in the middle will represent Jesus Christ.

 

7. The architect of Sagrada Familia and other famous structures in the Barcelona, Antony Gaudi was buried under at the  Sagrada Familia. His tomb is located in the underground level of the basilica and is covered by surrounded by four chapels dedicated to four different figure. Tourist can see the tomb for themselves.

 

8. During the Spanish civil war in 1936 group of anarchists entered the basilica and set fire to the basement. During this time period, the important documents related to the project were lost and the construction was very slow. 

 

9. There are three facades at the Sagrada Familia, the nativity facade, passion facade, and the glory facade. The nativity facade was completed by Gaudi himself and the rest of the two was completed later. 

 

10.Though when the construction of Sagrada Familia was started in 1826, it was supposed to be a simple Roman Catholic church. But later it was designated as a cathedral. Pope Benedict XVI declared it as a basilica in 2010.
