Roger B. Myerson, the Glen A. Lloyd Distinguished Service Professor in Economics at the University of Chicago, has received the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

Professor Myerson was awarded the Nobel Prize jointly with Leonid Hurwicz, University of Minnesota, and Eric S. Maskin, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, for their work on mechanism design theory.

The theory of mechanism design seeks to understand how resources can be allocated in socially effective ways even when the necessary information is spread among many individuals. In making the award, the Nobel Foundation noted that mechanism design theory today "plays a central role in many areas of economics and parts of political science."

Philip J. Reny, chair of the Department of Economics, describes Professor Myerson's path-breaking contribution to the theory of mechanism design as the discovery of a fundamental connection between the allocation of resources and the monetary payments needed to motivate individuals to share their information. This "revenue equivalence theorem" now forms a crucial part of the literature on mechanism design and is used especially heavily in the design of auctions.

Professor Myerson joined the University of Chicago faculty in 2001 after having twice served as a visiting professor here. He is the author of Game Theory: Analysis of Conflict (1991) and Probability Models for Economic Decisions (2005). He has published computer software programs related to his work and more than 70 papers on game theory and other topics concerning his research. He has been both a Guggenheim fellow and a Sloan Foundation research fellow.

Professor Myerson is part of a proud legacy at the University as he joins a list of 23 other University of Chicago faculty and alumni who have received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, including five current members of our faculty.
