ในประเทศจีนจะจัดวันที่ 4-5 เมษายน ยาวไปจนถึง 19-20 ซึ่งเข้าสู่ฤดูใบไม้ผลิส่วนในประเทศไทยจัดในวันที่ 5 เมษายน หรือตั้งแต่ 2-8เมษายน. โดยนับก่อนถึงและเลยไป 3 วันเป็นประเพณีที่สำคัญของชาวจีนเนื่องจากแสดงถึงความกตัญญูกตเวทีต่อบรรพบุรุษที่ล่วงลับไปแล้วจะมีการทำความสะอาดหลุมศพและตกแต่งให้สวยงาม,พร้อมทั้งส่งข้าวน้ำไปให้บรรพบุรุษที่ล่วงลับไปแล้ว 

    ตำนาน เล่าว่าในยุคชุนชิง องค์ชายแห่งแคว้นจิ้น หนีภัยไปมีชีวิตตกระกำลำบากนอกเมืองโดยมีเจื้ยจื่อทุย ตามไปดูแลรับใช้ เจื้ยจื่อทุย เป็นคนที่มีจิตใจเมตตาถึงขนาดเชือดเนื้อของตนเองมาเป็นอาหารให้องค์ชายเสวยหลังจากนั้นไม่นานองค์ชายได้กลับไปปกครองแคว้นและได้ตอบแทนบุญคุณของขุนนางและผู้ที่ช่วยเหลือตนเองแต่ก็ได้ลืมเจี้ยจื่อทุยไปเสียสนิทจนวันหนึ่งก็มีขุนนางเตือนถึงบุญคุณเจี้ยจื่อทุย โดยจะตอบแทนเจี้ยจื่อทุยโดยการดูแลเขาและแม่แต่เจี้ยจื่อทุยปฏิเสธิ ต่อมาเจี้ยจื่อทุยและมารดาก็ได้เสียชีวิตในกองเพลิงทำให้ฮ่องเต้ระลึกถึงเจี้ยจื่อทุย และมีคำสั่งไม่ให้ก่่อไฟและรับประทานอาหารสดซึ่งต่อมาเทศกาลนี้ก็มารวมเป็นเทศกาลเช้งเม้งและเปลี่ยนจากการไหว้ศพเจี้ยจื่อทุยมาเป็นการไหว้ศพบรรพบุรุษแทน
