The History of Japanese Doll
The History of Japanese Doll
The origin of Japanese dolls is also extremely old, beginning in the Jomon period about 3,000 years BC. From the earliest times, it seems that human-shaped figures had a ritual or religious purpose.
The first human-looking figures are the dogu from the Jomon Period(14,000 BC to 400 BC). Although there is not much known for certain about the purpose of the dogu, it is commonly believed that they must have had some ritualistic purpose, perhaps representing gods or spirits.
The Haniwa were clay figurines which were buried in circular groups around large tombs in the Kofun period (c. 250-550 A.D.). which were made for ritual use and buried with the dead as funerary objects. Haniwa were formed to represent all manner of people, including servants, warriors, dancers, farmers, and even animals, were almost certainly to be of use to the newly deceased.
It is during the Heian and Kamakura periods that we begin to see the first documented accounts of dolls. From 794-1192 in the Heian periods, the first dolls bearing resemblance to those of modern day were created. However, some of the dolls in these periods were hardly playthings because their function was that of scapegoat.
Hitogata, flat figures commonly made of wood or paper were used as a method of washing away one's troubles. It was thought that these figures had souls and their purpose was to absorb all that was evil or malevolent in the area. They would be cast off by throwing them on a bonfire or into the nearest river and evil will go with them.
Unlike every other type of doll so far, these were apparently intended as playthings.
Also born during the Heian, or perhaps Kamakura (1192-1336) period were the amagatsu and hoko. Amagatsu is the male form that were the first true plaything and clothing dolls. Its would accompany and protect the child.
Amagatsu will be placed next the pillow of newly born child for avert a danger to baby to escape. Another type of doll called hoko represented a female baby. Hoko were similar in function amagatsu but were soft bodied dolls. Both of these dolls are said to have been the inspiration and ancestors of the male and female hina dolls to come later.
The earliest hina were not free standing but were hand held. Male figures have their arms outstretched (like the amagatsu) and Female dolls usually have no arms. The earliest seated hina dolls are called Muromachi hina ningyo. They are quite similar to the standing dolls , besides being seated. These style dolls continued to be used, and evolved over the periods
Not only did new types develop but dolls advanced technically during the Edo period as well. Karakuri ningyo (mechanical dolls with wind up gears) and mitsuore ningyo (triple jointed dolls)
There developed both fine dollmakers and a market of wealthy individuals who would pay for the most beautiful doll sets for display in their homes or as valuable gifts. The sets would include the imperial pair, ladies in waiting, orchestra, dancers, ministers of the right and left, courtiers, and pages and all their accessories. Some the sets had thirty-four dolls in them.
Festival display dolls which had been the sole pastime of the elite were now being purchased and displayed by the increasing affluent merchant class. Both Hina Matsuri or girls' day on March 3rd and Boys' Day on April 5th, which helped promote dolls to became very popular throughout Japan and dolls became big business.
Original Kokeshi had purpose to sell as souvenirs to visitors who frequented the local hot springs and also as massage tools used by the bathers to tap their shoulders whilst use hot springs. Soon their popularity spread throughout Japan.
In modern era, washi paper is used as materials in the production of dolls such as anesama ningyo (three-dimensional) , shiori ningyo (flat) and shikishi ningyo that made with figures and scenes and are mounted on shikishi.
More recent and less traditional Japanese dolls are ball-jointed dolls (BJDs), whose growth in popularity has spread to the US and other countries since the advent of the Super Dollfie, first made by Volks in 1999. Because of this hands-on aspect of customization, they are not only popular with collectors, but also with hobbyists.
In the twentieth century, Japanese dolls utilized many of the same materials found in dolls made in the western world. But traditional Japanese dolls are still revered and collected.
